Kingston 256mb USB Drive for $20 Shipped After Rebate

Speed

This appears to be the "Full-Speed" version of the USB drive, not the "Hi-Speed" version. The Full-Speed is supposed to run at the old USB 1.1 speeds (12Mb/s max) while the Hi-Speed is supposed to run at the newer USB 2.0 speeds (480Mb/s max).

You can see more about the actual probduct at http://www.kingston.com/products/datatraveler_home.asp.

It states on both web sites it's 2.0 speed. How are you getting 1.1?

I'm sorry. I chose unfortunate wording. The standard for USB 1.1 allowed for a maximum transfer speed of 12Mb/s. The USB 2.0 standard allows for a maximum transfer speed of 480Mb/s (called Hi Speed). However, using a USB 2.0 label does not mandate that the device use the higher speed. When I said that the featured USB drive was using the USB 1.1 speed of 12Mb/s I should have said it was a USB 2.0 Full Speed device that is only capable of a maximum transfer rate of 12Mb/s and not even have mentioned the USB 1.1 standard.

Check out http://www.everythingusb.com/usb2/faq.htm for a FAQ about USB speeds.

According to the Kingston site, the USB drive is USB 2.0. But the Kingston site also has two separate USB 2.0 drives. One (the featured deal) is a USB 2.0 Full Speed drive (12Mb/s max transfer). The other (not featured) is a USB 2.0 Hi Speed drive (480Mb/s max transfer).

If you enjoy reading more of the techie stuff, check out http://arstechnica.com/reviews/004/flash/flash-1.html for a nice article comparing several different USB drives. Neither of the Kingston ones are included, unfortunately. If you are not really interested in the nitty-gritty results, there is at least a nice summary of USB 1.1/USB 2.0 and Low/Full/Hi Speed along with some editorializing about why these differences exist.

I apologize for causing confusion.

oh no problem at all. I'm definitely educated now. Only wish these things came in at least a full CD size of 800MB or larger for a decent price.

They do... Sandisk has a 1 Gig model. :)

yes but what's the cost? If it's over $50 it's not worth it. Just get an external HD for that price.

I think this drive is over USB 1.1, it just does not use the full 480Mb (60MB) of USB 2.0. The one labeled Hi-Speed does go to 480Mb, Im guessing this one probably uses slower Flash memory so cannot go quite this fast, but thats not to say its limited to 12 Mb/s.

Then again, I dont have one to test, so this is just speculation. If anyone has already ordered it, plug it in when you get it and see what windows (or whatever OS you use) says it is.
