LOUISVILLE -- Some people who have received Red Cross debit cards meant to help victims of Hurricane Katrina have been using the funds at Victoria's Secret, Circuit City and Hooters.
Phyllis Wilkins, of the Red Cross' office in Clark County, Ind., said her staff received tips that some card users actually were local residents with few or no links to areas damaged by Katrina.
Wilkins said three Louisville women came to her office Tuesday but did not receive money. According to a police report, the women said they were from Louisiana and asked for clothes and money. They later admitted that the stories weren't true.
Latoyia Taylor, 19, was charged with felony fraud.
Charges of fraud and false informing were filed against Norma Jean Calloway-Tillman, 34, and Denise Huguley, 24. All three were taken to the Clark County Jail.
One person has been arrested in Louisville in a similar case involving a Red Cross debit card worth $360.
Derick Clayton, 25, was charged Tuesday with fraudulent use of a credit card, which is a felony.
