Can anybody recommend good websites or books about basic gardening? We just moved into our home and finding ourselves clueless

We don't know how to pick-up the dead leaves (by hand???), what kind of grass we have (they already turned yellow on some parts), how often to mow, what kind of lawn mower needed (is it really needed? how about rotary type? can trimmer replace mower for only 100-120 sq ft grass?), etc... Oh my... :34:

We're on a tight budget, so any advice that save cost will help. Thanks...

Cement and alot of green paint should do the trick :)

Gardening for Dummies for $19.79 on Amazon or $26.99 from Barnes and Nobles

It seems to have good reviews. Other people might have better books but this is the first book I thought of.

*one tip*.. don't wait 2 months to mow the lawn like I did. One day I opened the window and "HAOWasasa!!" It was (not even exhaggerating) 2.5 feet tall! I had to have someone come and cut it for me ($170!!)

i wouldnt use a trimmer unless you want to rake it when you're done. a trimmer will leave the clippings in there "long form" while a mower will cut and mulch the clippings up into little tiny pieces which actually help add compost to your lawn. If you go into home depot or lowes and head to the lawn and garden dept, they should be able to point you in the right direction for a spring and fall fertilizer. By the brown spots, you may need some grub control as well. or you may just need to water (do this in the early morning or dusk). depending on where you live once a week is a normal mowing rate. spring time may be a bit more and the deep summer you can get away with twice a month sometimes.

if you end up buying a mower, i would just buy the cheapest walk behind walmart sells since you have such a small lawn. no need to get one with all the bells and whistles. but thats just my opinion... :)

and never cut off more than one third of the height of the grass... u could get some yellow results!

This site is pretty decent: http://doityourself.com/lawn/lawnmowingmadeeasy.htm

Thank you, jasejase. Yeap, I guess we'll need a mower, as the trimmer doesn't cut the same length. We did pick up the clippings since I read that the brown spots could be caused by too much nitrogen. I also learned about pests, diseases, etc. How complicated.

We ended up buying insecticide and spray it for the brown spots since we saw some green flying insects. We attempted for natural organic solutions, but we just didn't have time to research since we discovered other problem: leak in garage and the ceiling starts to peel off, and we haven't unpacked everything yet! How fun! :34:

wow - u got your plate full! good luck to you!

check out the June version of Consumer Reports, they, surprisingly (:)) tested and rated lawn mowers. Plus, they are the most reliable sourse for product reports. I believe 10 or so lawn mowers, ranging from great to decent, were all rated. Good luck!

Well I dont know much about gardening, but I do know some about lawn care since my wife and I bought a house about 1 1/2 years ago.

Go to Walmart and get a metal rake, I don't know the correct term, but it's the one w/ the long flexable fingers. This is the best for raking em.

I only know of three types of grass, the type w/ the long wide blades of grass is Saint Augustine. Another type is Bermuda , this type has thin blades and isn't real soft when you walk on it w/ your bare feet. The 3rd type is weeds, LOL... Our yard has Saint Augustine and weeds. :)

As for a mower it depends on your budget and what features you want. I personal have a 7HP self propelled snapper mower. It will bag, mulch, or blow the grass out the side. Most of the time I just mulch the grass. This is the best way since it puts the clipping back into the yard to decompost and you don't have to mess w/ bags of grass that add to landfill waste. Snapper are expensive though, I paid around $500 for mine, but they will last forever. My dad has a snapper that's at least 20 years old and still going strong. If that's out of your budget then I would look at your local home centers and compare the prices and features of the mowers. Find one that's in your budget that includes the features you want. As for actully mowing the grass, in the summer I mow around once every two weeks or so. If both of your neighbors have mowed and your yard is looking tall, well it's time to mow LOL. :)

You will also need a weed wacker. Gata trim around the tree's, house, fence, and along the street. I normaly wouldn't recommend power anything from Walmart, but they carry the Weed Eater line of trimmers. You can pickup a basic trimmer for about $100 and it does the job. I use mine to trim around the house, the trees, the fence, and a I also use it to edge the side walks. Just turn it up on it's side and go to town. It's cheaper than buying a dedicated edger and hey it works.

Now that you have made a nice mess you are gonna have to clean it up. Invest in a good broom or if you want to go the power route a blower to clean up the grass. Along the side walks if there isn't to much grass you can use the mower as a sorta blower. :)

As for watering I'm not real sure. I havn't had to water my grass yet since we have moved in, but I live in S. Texas and we get a fair amount of rain. Depending on your area you may have to water every week or once a month or never :).

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Kage_. A $500 mower for a small chunk of grass just doesn't sound :spoofee: to me. We already bought trimmer and blower from Ace Hardware deal posted in other thread. But we're thinking of returning the trimmer since we don't have a lot to trim due to desert landscaping. I just wished I had a gardener, chauffeur, chef, and personal maid that I used to have when I still lived back home ;)

If you only have a very small area to mow you may want to consider a reel mower. The kind that's not powered and you just push along. What's funny is that they can be more expensive than a cheap gas mower.

Ahhh to live at home again... Naaa no thanks... :)
