Until the policy was changed in October, cafeterias in the 18 schools of the North Penn School District (northwest of Philadelphia) had been supplying as eating utensils only plastic cutlery that was washed after each meal and reused, even though students had long expressed disgust at spoons and knives riddled with bite marks and had, defensively, taken to eating foods like yogurt and applesauce with their hands. (The district admitted that this recycling saved only $15,000 a year.) [The Morning Call (Allentown, Pa.), 10-27-05]

What ever happened to those safety platic cutlery that was giving away samples a couple months ago. maybe the school district could use those...Or, if they're already going to all the trouble of washing the cutlery, just use metal stuff. But i thought the whole point of plastic stuff was to save you the time of washing dishes. Time = money, and they probably spent more money paying to wash the plastic junk than buying new plastic stuff every day (additional hours to wash * however many schools washed the stuff (im guessing between 10 and 20) > $15,000...

:o i've been known to wash plastic flatware and reuse.

If you let guests/friends use the previously washed flatware that's nasty and I forgive you for not inviting everyone over for a Spoofee party, but if its just yours, hubbys and the kids exchanging drool and bitemarks, its alright. ;)

I was the object of bigdaddy's 1300th post. I should feel special. Yet somehow, I just feel like the "new" guy. :o

Wade will get to choose between:

1) a free reuse dehawk's reused toilet paper or
2) a close-up view of dehawk's lemur's (aka raccoon) "goodies" (from behind the fence)

:34:

This really unsanitary. Even if clean and sanitized, bacteria can still reside in the teethmarks. I'm glad this isn't one of my company's contracts. It seems like the school provides their own foodservice. They should contract their foodservice out to my company.

Is it a raccoon? kinda hard to tell. I was going for the lemurs from Madagascar...."Who wipes??"

Anyhoo, if I had to chose, I would definately chose to reuse the tp. Not that I would use it in any sanitary manner, but used toilet paper would make TP-ing someones house so much funnier. It's kinda like a cross between lighted bag of crap on the old guys frront porch and teepee. hmmm, sounds fun. Anyone know any stiffly stifferesons that need pranking?

Oh, and to keep on topic in the off topic forum...

I wonder where the school got the stuff i nthe first place. Were they going through trash for a month trying to find enough plastic flatware to last them through the school year, since they were gonna wash it anyway, why spend money on new stuff? :15:

If you ask nice, he might throw in a couple of rubber gloves, for use with the TP ;)

North Penn School District is near me (I have a few friends that go there and they're big in sports) and that's disgusting. The same thing used to go on in my elementary school. In my high school, we have plastic flatware but it's all new! :D

Yea, In my High School, Apollo High School, Owensboro, KY, we have plastic forks & Spoons, Ihey won't give us plastic knives, I don't know why :o ;) but we throw our forks and what not away, I think that their washing machine would melt the utensils

Ahhhh.....that explains it. They're big into sports. Who cares about the student who actually goes to school to LEARN, they just want to look good on the field. that extra 15 grand probably went to the new field house or uniforms. It makes more sense now.

Seriously though, i'm not THAT opposed to school sports programs, but I think they often get more attention than they deserve. Erik, do you think it is a possibility though that the hygene budget got cut to help fund the sports teams?
