I just bought a Mesa MP3 Modulator from SnapGone.com tonight. It looks like a great deal. For $23, I can have an mp3 player for my car! Woot! Now all I need is to find a good deal for a usb flash drive. :D

Just thought I'd share this in case someone is interested in getting on also. :)

I thought I saw one of these at Costco for $20. I'm not sure if it came with a flash drive, but if you don't want to wait, it might be worth checking out.

Careful, guys.. I hooked my iPod Photo up to a cigarette lighter usb adapter and I ended up frying my device.. Just make sure theyve got a guarantee. Either to replace your device or that its 100% compatible with later generation iPods (4G).

It looks like its a great deal, but not so great if it destroys your equipment. Hooking it into the audio jack Im sure is safe, but be careful if you intend to use this as a mobile charger.

This is a unique modulator because it has the flash drive capability, but name brand modulators are normally best.

LiveSquid, what kind of car charger fried your photo? I have the same unit you have and I have an audio in jack, so I plug it right in with a 1-foot cord and I have a Griffin PowerPod car charger. I also have an iTrip for my parents' cars without audio in jacks. The PowerPod can be had for $12-$15 shipped, it's made by Griffin (great company) and I haven't had a problem yet, it works great.

However, my radar detector was supposed to come with a cigarette lighter splitter so I could plug my radar detector and my iPod in at the same time, and it didn't. I should probably call the company. Now that I have my radar detector, it's a pain. I also have a cell phone charger but I rarely use that.

It was just a generic cheapie off eBay that fried it.. Thank god I had the replacement plan. I have the Belkin TuneCastII for my in car pleasure as my truck still has the stock stereo. I havent bought a charger, but if I do I will likey get the Griffin since its cheaer than the one made by Apple.

I didn't even know Apple made one...

I'm happy with the Griffin. I've also been happy with their iTrip. They make nice stuff.

Believe it or not, my 1992 Mitsubishi Diamante's stock radio has the input in. I love my car. ;)

I had a Belkin Tunecast original with my Dell DJ and it was pretty bad because Philadelphia's radio spectrum is pretty full. Looking to sell that if anyone's interested. :P However, my iTrip tuned to 90.5 works very well.

Yeah, Apple actually doesn't make any of them, they just sell a bunch.

Funny, the Griffin is $25 on the Apple site but it can be had for $15 on Buy.com, which is cheaper than the $20 Belkin model.

I've had good luck with the Griffin. In my opinion, it's the golden standard of car chargers, I'd recommend it.

so what would be the best car charger for the iPod? One that doens't fry it and one that is cost effective? I have one I got from eBay and its a "cheapie" as LiveSquid put it, and I've used it on my 20GB 4th Gen and it worked fine, but I just bought a 30GB photo, and haven't tried it on that yet. I don't want to take the chance and fry my photo.

I would go with Erik's... The Griffin one from Buy.com. For $15 you cant beat it. Griffin is maybe the biggest mfgr of iPod accessories, and as such they can be trusted. I cant use it though since it connects to the firewire cable. The Photo doesnt come with that cable.

Agreed. Griffin makes great stuff, the PowerPod is no exception.

At $15 shipped from Buy.com using the free shipping coupon (should still be there), it's a really good deal. I've used it with my 30GB photo for quite some time now with no problems.

Interesting, I can't find the PowerPod on the Buy.com site, they're out of stock.

hi Erik,

you're right, one link on buy.com says OOS - http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=90127073&loc=111&sp=1

but another says temp sold out - http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10354609&loc=101&hdwt=0&sp=1

i once ordered something from buy.com that noted it was temporarily sold out. buy.com did end up getting more in stock, and i received it about 2 weeks after i ordered it.

hth =)

ps, here's the link to the free shipping coupon - http://www.buy.com/retail/coupon.asp?prid=87819983&adid=17662

can u use the buy.com coupon multiple times? I already used it once to get a hat.

usually it's one coupon per person/account

Yeah, I think Griffin is also in the process of coming out with a new model, not sure what the differences are, if there are any. I'd keep an eye out for a couple weeks and see what Griffin comes out with, they may have discontinued mine.

hmm, good call. I'll keep an eye out. In the meantime I've been searching around trying to do some more research. Anyone here used the Belkin or Monster car charger? They're both pretty reputable and they tend to make sutff that works.

I just ordered the belkin one, and it seems cool... Theres an amplifier inside it with a 1/8" jack and you hook your adapter (tape or FM) into it, and connect your iPod. t charges the iPod and sends the audio through the amplifier so I only have one connection to make while Im in the car.If you follow me...

I was actually looking at the Non-Amplified one because I want a Line-Level Audio Out. Im going to be hooking it up directly to my deck and would like the head-unit to do all the work. I purposely bought a deck with an AUX-in. I've seen it for as low as 9.99 on eBay with about 5-6 dollar shipping. The one your looking for I've seen for under 10 bux shipped through eBay.

Yeah, I got it for around $12. I have the stock radio in my car still. I have an Explorer Limited and the stereo is tied into a DSP and some other fancy-schmancy crap I never use making it difficult to replace without having to go to an installer and pay through the nose. This is a much easier solution for me.

On Apple.com, the Belkin one gets a really bad writeup. I haven't checked out the reviews of the Monster one.

No kidding. Thanks for the heads up, E. Looks like Im going to relist this thing on ebay as soon as I get it. Seems that maybe half the people who wrote about it claimed it fried their device.. Forget that! Back to the drawing board...
