Mother's diet can help determine sex of child

The article's explanation doesn't hold water (which is not to deny that they've observed the phenomenon). They're saying that, given two embryos, presence of glucose encourages the male. But in utero there's (almost always) only one embryo available.

They've gotta explain why the dietary factors favor fertilization with the male sperm. Maybe the boys swim better in sugar? Maybe there's some change in viscosity that is suited to the male flagella movement? Without that, it's just a quirk.

Well, since they also tracked diet before conception, it's possible the selection happens before there is even an embryo. I seem to recall that there are diffs in male/female sperm motility and competition for access to the egg, so somewhat different rates of movement for each in glucose is not too much of a stretch. They're only saying diet is a factor, not that it explains all sex selection. Still, I agree the whole thing is a bit odd, which is why I started off with "Strange".

holds no water at all! I craved chocolate all through my last pregnancy, I got a girl that has a chocolate addiction! LOL!

One of the troubles of trying to discuss on a forum like this is, there are so many people who don't understand the difference between anecdotes and statistics.

It didn't work for me.
I did everything in my power....especially eating certain foods, but I got a girl instead. :secret:

Guess I should explain that....thanks Monk!!
I always wanted a boy first because I wanted, once I had a girl, for him to watch over his little sister.
She knows I wanted a boy first and she thinks it was a cute idea!

I wanted a boy and a girl too. :secret: Guess I ate too well during my pregnancy.:hungry: :pNow I can't imagine not having two boys. I'm kinda glad you can't decide what you get.

Exactly! I wouldn't trade Amber for the world...not even for a second!! :like::like::like:

I don't think I would have known whether to pick a boy or girl...glad some decisions are (mostly) out of our hands! We did find out at some point w/ the ultrasound though---I was too impatient to wait!

Butty, now what would one have to eat to have a bot, I wonder?!!

Would that be the bot daddy?! There's some species of insect that does that, I think...the female eats the male right after sex.

Well that explains alot - I am a cereal freak during pregnancy! lol
No cereal next time!!!!
LOL
Nah, I think it is all about genetics. I have a hard time believing food can be a factor in determining gender.

HOW FUNNY! I was going to ask her the same thing!

We never found out with either of my boys. And everybody and I mean everybody except for one person thought my baby boy was a girl! Fooled them again!
My husband enjoyed telling my parents again that it was another boy (they thought my first was a girl too) ;)

The older the mother is the more chance she has of having a boy.

I remember hearing that too. If the mom/egg is older, male sperm (Y-chromosome) supposedly have a better shot at making it through than those w/ the X-chromosome.

I wonder what role the age of the father plays...older mothers typically have old partners, so perhaps older men have better quality "boy" sperm for some reason? :sus:

There's a 10 year difference between my dh and I, but once he hit 36, we've only had girls... :convinced:

I can't find info online, but there's an old wives tale that older men tend to have girls.

I've always wondered what we changed to go from 3 kiddos, all boys, to our 6 pack, with the next 3 being girls.

Older fathers are associated with increased risk of achondroplasia, progeria, Marfan's syndrome, autism, and sporadic schizophrenia.
