Most cable companies charge rental or make you sign a 1-year contract (at least) to get a free modem. After your year is up, so is your warranty, usually.

And, the upstream/downstream won't matter much. That's controlled by the cable company through their routers. So, if you're looking to increase your speed by just getting a faster modem, don't.

I'm on DSL, so I'm not worried about it. :peace:

In my area, only RCN charge rental fee for the cable modem, Time Warmer and Cablevision don't charge (monthly fee won't be lower if you use your own modem). So if you are on RCN or other cable company that charge modem rental fee, and you are planning to use it for at least a year, then you can consider getting one.
DSL doesn't have rental fee, verizon down right sell you the modem (or the gateway). MY westell 6100F modem cost me $40. They used to have the offer of give out the modem for free with 1 year commitment.
Well, at least they give out $75 rebate for new customers from March (which I didn't get since I get the service in Jan :nonod:).

I'm with Time Warner and it doesn't matter how long I've been or not been with them. I just stop by one of their stores and exchange for free. Done it a couple times now.
