My cat Max who is 2 and a half has an ulcer on his tongue. I took him to the vet on Saturday because his tongue was hanging out of his mouth for 2 days and he wasn't eating. My husband discover some antifreeze in the driveway on Saturday and Max was sniffing it and we were afraid maybe he had got into it.
Well we took him to the vet and they did blood work and discovered the ulcer on his tongue. We got his blood work back and everything is fine. The thing is he's still not eating. Im going to go back to the vet this morning to get him some pain medication. They did give him a shot because he was dehydrated but he hasnt eaten in days. :(
I don't have a lot of experience with sick pets. When we were growing up my Dad was old school and didnt believe in taking animals to the vet. Now that I think about it we did go through a lot of cats.

So sorry to hear about that. I'm very attached to my pets too (especially my last one :( )

Did the vet say why the cat had an ulcer on his tongue? Just a guess, perhaps he ate something that's in his digestive system (maybe a needle, pin, etc.) and that's why he doesn't want to eat? What about an xray? (pricey I know)??

Keep us informed....I hope he feels better soon.

I understand. That's just how things were. I think vets were mostly for horses and farm animals. My Mom got a cat and said she doesn't remember ever taking one of ours to the vet when we were growing up and they somehow followed us home all the time. :o

Now I have two cats, both with spinal cord injuries. One has FIV which is like feline HIV, and the other can't feel half her body and had to have her tail severed at the base (before she was mine.)

So I empathize, and hope your cat is better soon. You may have to feed it cold water with a syringe or dropper, or they may have to put it on an IV at the hospital. :( Poor little thing. :money: Save your pennies - vets aren't cheap!
:cat:

I will keep you in my prayers.

Take Max to the vet with you this morning. He will probably need more care, especially if he isn't eating or drinking, and is sick. Tell Max it will be OK and all his Spoofee friends are thinking of him - and you!

Thanks guys. The vet said the ulcer was viral. I just picked up the pain medicine so hopefully this will help. He actually seems to be doing better today than yesterday. He was outside for a little while walking around. Hopefully the medicine will make him feel like eating. I guess I'll just keep following the vets orders, and yes vets are pricey. I'm already $300 into this. If I didnt love that cat so much....

They kinda get into your heart, don't they? Just in case, for anyone, the Animal Poison Control Hotline number is 888-232-8870. Save the number. It could save your pet's life. (There is a per incident fee.) :dog: :cat:

i can totally understand -- vet bills certainly aren't cheap, but there's nothing else we can do when we need to take our pets to the veterinarian. it's like having a family member who is sick and it makes your heart ache to see that.

i really hope Max feels better soon, SharonL :)

Well I think the pain medication has kicked in. He ate about 2 tablespoons of wet food, fell asleep and now he walking around with his tongue back in his mouth for the first time in days. He's actually cleaning himself a little bit. He just looks better. I think between the antibiotics and the pain medication he's going to be OK. Thank you everyone for the kind words and prayers. I really appreciate it.

My heatfelt empathy is extended to you and Max. Mwaaaaaaah... I feel so bad!

I know how it is. We had a $1000 cat growing up. He followed my sister home one day so originally we got it for free, but 7 years later it needed surgery (lost all his manly parts ) and then a couple years later it got hit by a car and had pins put in his hip. He lived until he was 20 (we think) after all that!

Just a note about antifreeze....DEADLY to Cats and dogs, they must be taken to the vet for the antidote within an hour or so after drinking it, or
it's too late.....I know this from personal experience,(a friend's cat, not mine)
They drink it because it taste sweet to them..clean it up right away if you happen to spill some on the driveway....My 2 cents ;)

Just wanted to let everyone know that Max is doing 100% better today. :) He's eating! I think the pain medication was a lifesaver. I feel so much better just knowing he's getting some relief. I think in a day or two he's going to be back to his usually self, chasing bugs and scratchin' furniture. Max thanks you for all your get well wishes!
