Audrey Hepburn –ish
the story of a vengeful shopaholic
A novel by Shannon Spence

“Someday life is going to turn around and bite you in the ass”
That is what Yvonne’s mom said to her one night, little did her mom know, it already had, and still is. The only thing keeping Yvonne sane is her shopping addiction and her cell phone. Now being a shopaholic seems to mean you’re insane because whenever you bring up shopping in her family they shun it. They also think that her saying (that is so Audrey Hepburn-ish) is crazy. There isn’t a single person in the world that understands her, because in her world, you can’t trust anyone, nobody is your friend and you weave a web of lies that you hide behind fake smiles. Yvonne isn’t sure what to do until she starts thinking deep into her life and finds that her life isn’t all that Audrey Hepburn-ish after all.

thanks heres the first chapter(i just finished it.)
Chapter one
“I need to go shopping so badly.”
“Shut up Yvonne”
“Thanks mommy dearest, I have three more weeks till school and I am close to hyperventilating, I want a Luis Vuitton backpack this year!”
“Shut up with this Luis Vuitton, think of the people who don’t have any bags at all!”
“I hate you, why can’t you understand me already; you don’t think life is hard for me?”
“You already have everything!” added Nathan, Yvonne’s older brother who was a sophomore in high school.
* * *
“I hate my mom, she doesn’t understand me at all, and she is so not Audrey Hepburn-ish” Yvonne was saying to her best friend Tess on her cell phone.
“I gotta go, call me later?”
Before Yvonne could answer Tess hung up. Probably to hang out with her boyfriend Lewis who loved her. Yvonne had a boyfriend but didn’t like to call him that; she liked to say they were going out. It’s seemed more exclusive, more Audrey Hepburn-ish.
* * *
Yvonne went into her joined bathroom only to find her brother waiting for her with open arms. The joined bathroom brought them together. They were so close it wasn’t even funny. The bathroom was like their meeting place. They had chairs in there and everything.
“I heard you and mom fighting today”
“So, who didn’t?”
“I got you something” he said as he held out a box
“Oh you didn’t have too” she said as she opened it. Inside was the Luis vuitton backpack she always wanted. She never was so happy in her life!
“Oh my god!” she said as she scratched the handles “it’s real!”
“Also…’ he gave her an envelope hidden with money saving coupons for her trip with Tess to Maine.
“Thanks Nathan…., omigod. I have never been happier; you are the best brother in the whole entire world!”
“I know but don’t spend all your money.” He said with a grin
“I love you so much” Yvonne said as she rushed into her brothers arms as her mom called her down for dinner.
* * *
“so Yvonne are you exited about your trip to Maine with Tess?” her dad asked her obviously trying to start an conversation after sitting through dead quiet for almost half an hour.
“Yes dad” Yvonne replied like a perfect angel, just then, Yvonne’s cell phone rang. Before anyone could say anything else she ran to answer it. Dreading staying in the dreary silence of the dinner table.
Yvonne looked at the caller id on her cell phone and saw it was from Rip her boyfriend; obviously he was with Henley Yvonne’s best guy friend who has to drag Rip to call her. Rip wasn’t exactly a cool boyfriend; they were from different sides of the lunch room, which seemed like miles even though it was only tables. In the lunchroom you are separated, at one end the popular people sit which Yvonne sat at, she was so popular her and her friends sat at the very first table, and it planned to stay that was for a very long time, so after that first table you sit depending on how popular so Rip sat at the 3rd to last seat and Henley sat two or three tables away from Yvonne. Even though in her group it’s shunned upon to have a boyfriend not within the 5 table radius she didn’t care.
She let the call go to voice mail because she didn’t feel like dealing with Rip right at that moment, even though she loved him, he could be annoying but he called again, relieved he got her out of dinner she answered the phone and got greeted by
“I love you, I will miss you” with no Henley in the backround, he did this by himself!
“I love you too” was all she could say. How sweet was he! Nobody except Tess remembered or maybe Rita, one of Yvonne’s best friends who were sisters with Lucy, Nathan’s girlfriend, Rita was mad because like Tess and Yvonne she was a shopaholic too and her parents wouldn’t let her go. This was Yvonne’s back to school blast, she had most of her back to school shopping done but, no shopping was ever done with in Yvonne’s world.
“So you going to bring back something sexy” Rip said in a low voice
“Maybe” she said flirting right back.
“I am really going to miss you”
“Why don’t we meet at chasey’s for a last kiss before I leave on Wednesday?”
“It would be my honor”
“Bye”
* * *
“Yvonne hey!” Rip greeted Yvonne with a nice kiss.
“Hi Rip”
They shared chocolate lattes and then their song came on, they started dancing, a great goodbye present they kissed and this was it, a week in Maine with no Rip but a picture and text messages. She was going to miss him. The next thing she knew Tess entered with Lewis, no doubt their final kiss before Tess leaves. So outside Yvonne and Rip kissed again, a nice kiss where they rub noses throughout the kiss. She never wanted to let him go.
“I will call you as soon as I get home, that’s a promise!”
“You better” Rip said as they parted ways never to see each other again for a week.
* * *
That night, Yvonne packed all the essentials in the Luis vuitton. This was a lot. Just then her brother came in.
“Packing up the Luis vuitton” he asked
“Yep” she replied a little nervous to be without her brother.
“So..........”he was cut off. Yvonne hugged him so hard his brain almost popped out. It wouldn’t have made much of a difference anyways.
“I am going to miss you so much”
“Me too”
“You aren’t worried about me”
“Of course I am but you grew up in the city, what is there to be worried about, you’re still here aren’t you and if you can survive the city, I think you can survive everything else.”
“Really?”
“Really” he said in an assuring tone.
“I love you Nathan, you know that I do”
“I just wish you and mom could get along the way we do.”
“Then make her share a bathroom with me” Yvonne said with a giggle
* * *
In her bathroom Yvonne was packing her big Luis vuitton toiletry bag, a gift from her aunt Louise. She packed everything, her makeup, her hair color and a bottle of Advil and Midol with a couple of feminine hygiene products. While she was packing she looked in the mirror and right behind her was her mother. She screamed so loud that Nathan ran in, but quickly exited once he saw his mother in the bathroom after he took some earplugs, this might get loud.
“What the hell mom,”
“I just wanted to help you pack” surprised by her mom’s kindness she let her. She acted disgusted when Yvonne anounced she was using her coach bag.
“Mom, why do you want to help me?”
“Because you are my daughter and even though I think you can be so interested in stupid things you still are my blood and blood is thicker than water”
“Cut the crap why?”
“No reason, do you need anything ironed?”
“No mom, stop changing the subject”
“I am not changing the subject was just asking if you want anything ironed, jeez, I can’t be nice to you without the third degree, can I?”
“No you can’t”
“Well I love you” Yvonne almost choked
“What”
“I love you”
“I love you too, I guess”
“You guess”
“I don’t know”
“Who called you at dinner today?”
“Rip”
“Oh”
“Yea”
“I am going to miss you”
“Me too mom”
“I’ll buy you something”
“Oh I forgot they had the world largest mall there”
“Yea”
“Well I guess you will have a lot of fun then”
“Yea I guess I will”
“Give me a hug”
“Why”
“Because I love you”
“No you don’t”
“Yes I do”
“Whatever you say” they hugged briefly but Yvonne didn’t feel right she felt like it was all fake, did she really hate her mother of did she just say that in the moment, this was scaring her so she quickly excused herself to go to the bathroom where she knew Nathan was waiting for her, or probably listening by the door.
“Hey”
“How did it go?” Nathan asked as if she just took a big test or performed in a big show”
“Good but awkward”
“Ok that’s cool, so you packed your laptop, cell phone, palm pilot, ipod…”
“Yes”
“That’s cool”
“I can’t believe my little sis is going to be gone for a week, a whole week, a week without Yvonne, a perfectly good example of pros and cons.” Nathan said sarcastic
“Shut up” Yvonne said punching him in the arm.
“Ow!”
“Suck it up you wimp” she remarked with a smile.
“Do I smell something burning?”
“Nope, not a good time to use that, because the insult or the remark in this case was towards you and you totally ruined it” Yvonne said in her smarty pants tone
“You are too smart for me”
“I know.”
“Good night”

i need help, what do you do on a 5-6 hr train ride with your best friend?

Chapter 2
That morning everything was different. Yvonne was leaving and she had to meet Tess at the train station at 1:25 it was 11:45 already. Yvonne forgot all about her and her mother and focused on her trip. So there Yvonne was running around in her juicy couture undies. Secretly thanking god they weren’t thongs. Finally at 12:00 Nathan grabbed her and told her to slow down, she was okay. She got dressed in her bcbg max azria outfit, a tube dress with Gucci coco platform heels with a fendi headscarf for that Audrey Hepburn-ish look saving the tiara for when she went out to dinner that night with Tess, probably enjoying the luxury of lobster or some sort of fish. She finally grabbed her coach bag. It was 12:45. She said goodbye to her day
“Bye daddy-kins”
“Bye princess, I will miss you call me everyday” he said as he passed her and book, and gave her a big hug.
“Bye Nathan, ill talk to ya”
“Bye Yvonne” he hugged her, then it came to say good bye to her mom.
“By mommy...” before Yvonne could finish her mom embraced her in a tight hug.
“Call me everyday; be safe, I love you”
“I love you too mom, bye”
“Bring me back coach!” Yvonne almost tripped over air.
“What did you say?”
“I said bring me back some coach” Yvonne’s mom said with a smile, a good start to a great vacation.
“Okay mom, I will, I love you” Yvonne was never happier. It was one o’ clock right now it took fifteen minutes to get to the train station, it was perfect, and it was Audrey Hepburn-ish.
As Yvonne arrived at the train station, with all her luggage, she felt like this was going to be the greatest vacation she ever had. Yvonne and Tess boarded the train and never felt happier. About an hour through of planning talking and vaguely reading they fell asleep. And woke up two hours before the train pulled into the Portland station. When Yvonne checked her cell phone it showed 10 missed calls, obviously her life revolved around her cell phone two were from Henley the 8 other one were from rip.
Yvonne called rip back, fortunately nothing important happened except that he missed her and he got her present currently being mailed to the seaside hotel they booked, so Audrey Hepburn-ish! It even had a kitchen and a counter space, since Yvonne paid attention to detail she needed a counter space to talk to Tess over coffee, tea or hot chocolate. It was how it was supposed to be. Rip soon got off the phone. She dosed off again but was woken up when she heard tee scream,
“Oh my god, we are finally here!”
“YES” Tess and Yvonne screamed making the whole train look at them.
They decided since it was Wednesday and they had till Thursday they went to a couple of local shops and bought a couple of things but nothing serious. They went back to one of the coolest hotels ever and while they were on the beach looking at the beautiful view since it was too late to get a tan Tess asked Yvonne where “that is so Audrey Hepburn-ish” came from and Yvonne couldn’t answer because she never really thought about it, where did it come from? She really had to think about it
“Ask me later”
“Why”
“Because I don’t know the answer right now”
“Okay”
“Thanks”
“Isn’t this a beautiful view?”
“An abandoned beach how cool is that?”
“And we have it all to ourselves!”
“I love life”
“I know, I do too”
“Cause we are so hot and they are not, they try being but they can’t match up to me try as you will but this job you won’t be able to fill. TRY ME.” Tess and Yvonne sung the song they made up last year in seventh grade. It sounded so childish now. Now that they were older.
* * *
After the beach they went back to the room after a quick dip in the pool for exercise. They got their pajamas on and were sitting in their beds when Tess asked again of the origin of Yvonne’s trademark saying.
“So have you thought about what I asked you before?”
“About what”
“That is so Audrey Hepburn-ish”
“Oh yea I did”
“That’s cool so tell me”
“Okay”

Chapter 3
“So, tell me”
“Okay, okay”
“ so, I watched Breakfast at Tiffany’s and was so inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s performance I just wanted to be like her, all this started in 6ixth grade when it was only a saying not a status symbol, now if I saw that people move up a table in the lunchroom, I don’t know why though.”
“Really, that’s fascinating yev but this is your trade mark now, you know if you stopped saying that you wouldn’t be you or sitting with us, you would finally be sitting with your boyfriend”
“I know, I can’t give it up now that I don’t want it anymore”
“I guess that is life”
“So what about your life”
“What about it”
“What is so perfect about it?”
“the fact I have a best friend like you, its like there is a Brightside out of tragedy”, in sixth grade right before seventh grade, Tess’s friend Amy moved away, Amy and Tess were the dynamic duo of sixth grade but when she moved away Tess was looking for another girl to take place of Amy and went to her second closest friend, Yvonne or as Tess says now “yev” or “yevy”.
They were listening to Yvonne’s ipod on the sound dock when the song “I have nothing” by Whitney Houston’s song. The Audrey Hepburn-ish song! They got up immediately and did their vogue impersonations of Audrey Hepburn, pure class.
“I am so lucky I have a friend like you”
“Yea, Tess, me too.” Just then Yvonne’s cell phone rang, from Rita.
“I had to call”
“At 1 in the morning?”
“Isn’t there a time difference?”
“No”
“Oh well, you are up anyways, so go shopping yes?”
“Not to the big stores but to a couple of local stores and rite aid to get my slim fast and some groceries”
“Okay”
“So”
“Yea”
“Why did you call?”
“I don’t know”
“Rip called you”
No he didn’t”
“Okay then why did you call?”
“Because, I manna go shopping!”
‘I know, as soon as I get home we are going to the Manhattan mall and shopping our hearts out”
“You better keep that promise”
“I will”
“You better”
“I have to go”
“Okay”
“Bye”
Bye”
“Good night”
“You better”
“Good bye” she drifted off as she hung up
That morning they ran around getting ready they were going to cover a mall, not the outlet mall, but a mall. They took a shower, did the beauty regime that seemed almost religious to them, put on a holly would dress and shoes and put on makeup with carefully picked out shoes picked out by one of the more shoe smart friends back home, Priscilla, or “preco” as they called her. So out the door they went as they caught a bus or trolley or something to the nearest mall.
Yvonne and Tess went shopping and covered the whole mall twice; they bought something in almost every store and stopped to get their nails done. That day was going perfectly. No call from Rita, Rip or Henley. They called their parents so everything went up from there.
They went back to their room went for a quick run thinking about their friend Sarah, who imed her right after they went for their run.
Club chick: so you staying in shape
Audreyhepburnshopaholic: yes clubby
Club chick: I have to go train for a marathon.
Audreyhepburnshopaholic: is dehawk still stalking you
Club chick: hopefully not but calgirl should take care of it!
Just then their Tess’s sister who was getting married soon signed on
Babuska: hey how is it going?
Audreyhepburnshopaholic: great
Babuska: great I got to go but preco is on
Just then a message from the shoe girl herself popped up
Precoandhershoes: hi, I am going shoe shopping bye
Audreyhepburnshopaholic: what
Auto response from Precoandhershoes: went shoe shopping p.s if this is Yvonne or Tess bring me back some shoes.
Just then Yvonne’s friend Beverly sent her a message
Sexy mama: go to Larry’s lobster house
Audreyhepburnshopaholic: ok thanks
Sexy mama: no problem ttyl
Audreyhepburnshopaholic: ok bi.
Yvonne did her hair in a bun with the tiara and a little black dress; she looked exactly like Audrey Hepburn. It was so Audrey hepburnish.
“You look great” Tess said as Yvonne emerged from the bathroom.
“So do you”
“We both do”
“Of course we are the queens”
“Hopefully we will be treated like queens”

Chapter 4
Dinner was great. They ate luxuriously and two people commented on their Audrey Hepburn looks.
“That is so Audrey Hepburn-ish!” they both said in unison. This was a great vacation so far, next year she wanted to go to Italy with Rip, a nice romantic trip but not too romantic, Yvonne was a catholic and even though she doesn’t really exercise her religion she was still a virgin until marriage. Tess and she were going to be friends forever she could just feel it in her blood, but her best friend Zia wasn’t going to be forgotten easily; she was visiting her family in Greece and was going to join the girls in 4 days. Zia was Yvonne’s friend before anyone else, so Yvonne was always true to her. Her and her friend Tasha set her up with Rip so she owed them, big.
They caught a bus and rode home, to happy to do anything but smile. They sat on the beach all dressed up, it felt so right, so Audrey Hepburn-ish. The next day was the day they were going to the outlet mall in Kittery last time Yvonne was there she got a bra for 4.00! Obviously she was going to have to use that bargain usage this time.
* * *
That night Yvonne had a weird dream, she was with Rip and he saw her but she don’t see herself, she couldn’t see what she was wearing or even her face. He kept on getting closer and closer and commenting on her but she couldn’t see what he was talking about. They Henley came in the picture and that scared her because all of her friends even her family came in and started commenting, good and bad, but she couldn’t see herself. She woke up crying and screaming at the same time. She couldn’t believe it did the dream symbolize something. The only person she didn’t see there was her mother. Yvonne was scared did this mean she couldn’t see her true self?
“I had the weirdest dream”
“I know you were talking I your sleep, something about being invisible and to tell you what you were commenting about and to stop”
“Really?”
“Yea what was that all about?”
“I don’t know”
“I hope you find out, I got a little scared the way you woke up”
“Okay”
They boarded a bus and went to breakfast at one of those famous blueberry pancake places; they split a stack of pancakes because they were both on ‘summer vacay diets’
Then the finally awaited moment of the vacation happened the arrived at one of the outlet malls they planned to cover two or three of the different outlet malls.
“Shoppers paradise”
“I know Tess can you believe it”
“I know Yvonne”
“lets go in crate and barrel and hit the mall after this, I fell like going shopping like this tomorrow because today we should go to most of the malls and go mall hopping”
“Yea, that’s smart, a full day of shopping perfect”
“I know”
“I can’t wait”
After a lunch of taco bell and a home cooked dinner of fried sole they went to the pool and relaxed I the Jacuzzi and then went swimming for exercise. They did most of the malls and planned to do the rest tomorrow. When Zia came they were going to go full frontal shopping one more time and head to Bar Harbor for 3 days and come home.
“Do you miss your family” Tess asked Yvonne as they were walking back to their hotel room.
“No not really, not that much anyways, I miss Nathan most of all but I really miss Rip, Henley and Tasha. Zia should be here soon so I don’t miss her that much”
“Oh okay”
“Do you miss anyone, Tess?”
“Well not that much but I do miss Lewis”
“I know I know”
“You want to kiss Rip don’t you?”
“Yea and you want to kiss Lewis”
“Yea”
“I kissed sephora once”
“I know me, too”
“That’s cool”
“; lets go to sleep I want to get up early tomorrow.”
“Yea me, too”
After dong some yoga by the ocean they were so tired they practically fell in their beds.
“This is so not Audrey Hepburn-ish” Yvonne mumbled
“I know” replied a very tired Tess
“Let’s go to bed”
“I know”
“Then why are we still talking”
“I don’t know”
“Then let’s shut up”
“Okay”
“Good-night”
“Good night” silence followed and the you heard Tess mumble
“Happy shopping”
“Shut up Tess”
“I’m just saying”
“Well stop saying”
“Okay”
“So shut up”
“Okay”
“Are you shutting up?”
“Yes”
“well good night and happy shopping, there I said it happy, I even put it all together so I don’t waste time” a long silence and then you hear the sound of Tess fake snoring.
“Tess…..” Yvonne said trying to hide a giggle
They both broke out laughing and couldn’t go to sleep for another ten or fifteen minutes. This was obviously the price of a good friendship, missing an hour of sleep talking about nothing and missing valuable shopping time. Hopefully this was the only cost of friendship Yvonne hoped.
