Netgear WGR614 802.11g Wireless Router for $22.99 Shipped After Rebate

Eh, $23 is pretty so-so here. Within the past 10 days I've seen the CompUSA G router for $3 after rebate (which I did get) and the NetGear router FAR (though it was a tricky deal).

stay away from this router. it's got to be the worst g router out there right now. Look at all of the reviews and go on Netgear user forum and search for WGR614 and you'll see. In fact, it is so bad, that after getting it for FREE this past weekend at CC after PM, I have returned it without even trying. Now, it takes a lot of things to be wrong with a FREE item for me to return it! :thumbs_do

Wow. I have that router and am very pleased with it. It has worked flawlessly for me. CNet has a review of it that is decent, too. I think they gave it a 7/10. :suspect:

I have an older B NetGear router and I was pleased with it, to an extent. It really bothered me after a while that it didn't have a bridging mode. After a firmware upgrade I had to set static IPs on some interfaces to get certain internet connections to work, whereas they worked fine before.

The horrible reviews have to do specifically with the WGR614 model by Netgear. The main issue seems to be due to overheating that causes very frequent connection losess (both wired and wireless), necessitating manual router resets sometimes every 10 minutes or so. Read user reviews, (not bogus CNET editor reviews) especially on the netgear user forum. And, google "WGR614 problems". :zip:

I am like you. I picked up a B router for a client once. I spent the next 2.5 hours trying to get the router from intercepting my web browser page requests and displaying the stupid beginners setup process. I knew the router was pulling a proper IP, it just wouldn't let me through.

There were a lot of other problems, so I just took it back.

Fortunately, I had another client who mail ordered one recently, using a different ISP, and I had little problem getting it setup, though the customer had a lot of troubles with it. But I want a router that will function properly. I commend Netgear for trying to make it common user friendly, but print out a setup guide, or put it on a CD like LinkSys or DLink. Don't make it part of the flipping html interface.

In fact, there are only two companies that have irked me so much that I cannot recommend them to anyone, and I avoid like the plague. The first is PNY (their warranties mean crap and every product that I've owned has busted a capacitor or broken in some other way and they won't fix them) and Netgear.

I rely on this model router a lot. I really like it. The quality of the unit is very nice for the price. I have installed many of them (maybe 20 or 30) for my various customers. No one seems to have a problem. I use the later version of the WGR614, the newest model. I think in the earlier versions there were problems, but they have worked them all out.

The NetGear 614 router has a power supply problem the causes you to loose WAN connections. I got one at CompUSA for $29 and after 1 week I replaced ith with a DLink. I used to like NetGear, but I will never buy from them again.
