They are selling the MR814 for $47.24 with a $20 rebate as well, although ya know none of us will see a netgear rebate before 2005. Frank from TCA is a nice guy but netgear is the crap when it comes to paying out on rebates.

Yup...Netgear is the only company that rejected my rebate. For the 802.11b router, no less....

The wireless G is faster than the B right? I have the D-link 614 wireless, it work with my $10 wireless card for my laptop. I wonder, if I buy the netgear G, does it work with my old laptop wireless card?

G runs at up to 54Mbps, and B at 11Mbps. B is totally fine for broadband, and unless you transfer a large amount files to and from several wireless computers frequently, I just don't see that G will offer you value for your money. Longer range perhaps also, but as you stated, your current setup is working.

As for interopability and whether G is backwards compatible with B, it's sorta supposed to be but sorta isn't always. It depends on what chipset is used and the manufacturer, initially G had some troubles with backwards compatibility with B due to some manufacturers rush to get products to market, it is better now. Generally it does, just not guaranteed either.

The question is, why buy a G router? Unless you also replace your network 802.11b pcmcia card with a G variant, what would you gain? I don't think G hardware will go up in price, just down over time, so if what you have works and works well for your uses now, why fix it?

I dont think anything in the electronics industry will ever go UP in price. It's all bound to come down. Electronic advancements take place so fast, everything is out of ddate... that's just how it is... Same thing with Cars, no point in a 60 months (5-year) lease, cuz your car will be less than half value by the time you've paid 4 years of it.

Only industry that goes up in value is real-estate. Go figure, no matter what, people need a roof...
