I am sure most of you already knew about this but if you didn't here is a little info.

If you are getting the popular Disc Read Error when trying to play games, Sony will repair or replace the unit free of charge. You just need to call the number below, answer a few questions, and they will send you out return instructions.

I have done this one time before and now the unit they repaired is doing the same thing a year and a half later. I just called and they said I can send it in and they will repair or replace my unit at no charge for me again.

:D

For technical assistance with the PlayStation 2, PS one, or PlayStation in the U.S. & Canada, please contact SCEA Consumer Service at 1-800-345-SONY (7669) Monday Saturday 6:00 AM 8:00 PM PST and Sunday 7:00 AM 6:30 PM PST in order to thoroughly troubleshoot your problem and for us to assist you.

I did not know this. Thank you for the info.
I haven't received any errors, but if I do I know what to do now..thanks

So Choochoojr...did you get a replacement or a repair? I want a replacement even though I don't get any error. My model is so old. Wat type of questions do they ask? I think I might just called them up for the heck of it...think it'll be worth it?

DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU GET THE DISC READ ERROR, they verfiy the unit when it is returned. If it is not broke they make you pay a diagnosis fee and pay to have he unit shipped back to you. They are not stupid! Come on, they are trying to make good on a known problem don't try to take advantage of the situation unless you need it.

Last time they sent me a refurbished unit. They ask if the unit has been modded, if the unit has had liquids spilt on it and if you have tried the self diagnosis on the machine.

Here is a statement from the return email I received:

Note that a diagnostic fee may be charged for consoles that the Service Center will not repair.
These would include consoles that have been modified or tampered with; show signs of infestation or
liquid damage; have had their serial numbers removed/defaced; or, the cost to repair exceeds the
cost of a new console.

I am not sure, I know with the certain a model number(SCPH30001) it happens almost all the time. I just bought a new(replacement) PS2 from Circuit City, for $149 and I figured before I used it I would call and see if they would fix my old one again and to my surprise they said yes.

I originally bought my PS2 the week they first came out, it finally died in December of 02, I called and sent it in and they sent me a refurbished unit at that time, the refurbished unit worked for about 8 months before it broke again and has been sitting ever since. So now I will send it in again and see how long this one will last bfore it needs to be repaired. :hmm:

it's a "limited lifetime warranty." the warranty, itself. is a lifetime warranty. however, the warranty has limits to it. it only covers manufacturer defects, not your ****ups. if you drop it and break it, the warranty will not cover it. if it breaks on it's own, then it covers it, for as long as you own it or as long as SONY stays in business.

It worked for me in NOV '03. but becasue some JackAss misplaced the papperwork I sent w/ it I did not get it back untill JAN '04. But it was free

I knew there was a know issue when I called ... the tech said to me," Well Seeing how I was unable to resolve the issue over the phone, we will waive the repair cost." .... WHAT, SONY DO SOMTHING FOR FREE. Chris it cost me 85 dollars for a wiring harnes for a 10 year old car radio

Bump, this stiill works. My cousin just did this with a broken PS2 someone gave him. :bigok:

too bad me and my cousin took off the little do not open tags, inside when we tried fixin it ourselves

just replyin

hey when you call in do they ask for your receipt or can you just call in any ps2 with a disc read error. My buddy buys them off ebay and fixes them, I just want to know if we can send those in for new ones?

most likely they fix yours or give you refurbished ones not brand new ones. and they check up on why its not working the ones from ebay could have been misused, dropped etc. and the warranty dosent cover that.

No you do not need a receipt. They will ask you if it was attempted to be modded, subject to moisture or bug infestation. They will have you run a PS2 diagnostics test and let them know the results. If you send it in and they determine that the system was abused, you will have to pay the shipping fee to have the unit sent back to you, UNREPAIRED. They do not send you a new one, they just send you back yours but repaired.

My XBox is starting to give me dirty disc errors, will MS fix this free? Lol...

100% True

When the sony rep told me," Well ... seeing how we could not it working over the phone we will waive the repair cost." WHAT ... sony do somthing for FREE ... Huh. 2.5 months later, after thry lost the paper work and I call 10 times I finaly got it back... and ... the PS2 I have was moded at one point. Small mod only one wire inside, it is a extenal mod, plugs into the USB. But thry did fix it. it has worked good.
