How would you compare this to the NEC 3500, which is a 16X? I know Plextor has a good rep. Would it's 12x come close in performance to the 16x on the NEC?

Only bad thing is that Tigerdirect rebates never come. They are not a very reliable company with regards to rebates. So it may look good at first but weigh the option of not getting the rebate plus $10 for shipping and this is not a very good deal.

In regards to the rebates on the Plextor, this is a manufacturers rebate so TigerDirect can't screw you out of this one. I bought my Plextor from Tiger Direct last week for $89 after shipping. That makes it $59 AR. You'll find the Plextor rebates on their web site:

I agree with you on one thing - Tiger Direct has tried to screw me on their in-house rebates on more than one occasion. I have managed to collect them all after threatening them with the Better Business Bureau and the Attorney General's office.
