I was looking into this Wild Blue Satellite service and when i contacted the local retailer they also offered me their service. He was explaining how Wild Blue is a satellite and there is a latency (delay) period before a page loads, etc. and with his service they use towers at there business that is near my house and i would have an antenna with a smaller delay period now.

WB= 512mbps download/128 upload = $50/mo
His local= 256mbps download/256 upload = $50/mo
set ups and equipment charges are the same

he also said that they are planning (no promises) when they get 10 more customers they want to expand and double speeds.....for the same price.... all i keep seeing is 2 times the speeds for downloads with wb for the same price.

He also pointed out that more people use WB meaning more traffic, less people use his so there isnt so much traffic! PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

Wow, they're terrific deals! I wish I could have that kind of connection. 256 Mbps! Are you sure it's not 256 kbps? ;)
If it were 512/256 kbps, it's rather slow, but should work fine for most internet browsing. If you don't play games over internet, latency should not be a problem. Compare the terms of the contract too, if any. Call your phone company before committing, see what plan they have for DSL/cable. Also, check www.dslreports.com

that sounds slightly unrealistic. 512 MBPS? Don't you mean kbps?
Top cable/ dsl speeds do not exceed 8-10mbps

AVOID AVOID AVOID! Those are INCREDIBLY s-l-o-w. You can get SBC at up to 1.5 mb for only $12.99

$50 is OUTRAGEOUS!!! :o    :zip: ;) :D

I'm in the same situation - No DSL/Cable available, 1 satellite service and 1 wireless service available. Costs are high for either - in line with what you are seeing. I've opted to stay with dial up for now as I connect to my employer's network via a VPN (yes it runs over dial up fine, albiet slow). Do you plan on connecting to another network ie work/school? If so, you'd want the symmetrical connection or stay with dial up.

well i just found out the guy typed my address in wrong and I cant get signal from his tower so it looks like i am going to get Wild Blue for 49.99 a month with a 512kbps download/128 upload...

what is uploading????? when do you upload on the internet... just wondering b/c the connection is slower....

but with dial up, isnt the fasted speed 56k???

plus my internet is a business write off anyhow...

just get the wild blue don't listen to the idiot sylent he has no clue.

o, sorry i didn't answer this before but the upload speed is when u upload pictures to the internet or when u fill in a form or anything like that where you put something into the internet i.e. upload and it is always slower. by the way, web accelerator sucks because all it does is reduce the quality of pictures and things like that on a web pase so it starts up faster. once again sylent has no clue and couldn't even buy one.

The wireless deal sounds attractive (if you could get it), but I think that a company that is looking to get 10 more customers to perform an upgrade in speeds is not a company you want to be with. If they have less than say, 50 customers, who knows what could happen with them?

At least with WildBlue, you know they'll probably be around for a while... also, the latency shouldn't really matter as long as you're not gaming etc.

OK buddy I have no clue and i'm an idiot? That wasn't nice...uploading isnt just uploading pictures to the internet...uploading is when you transmit a file (not fill a form retard) to another computer or server that is set up to recieve files...basically its the opposite of downloading your uploading...common sense...and Taz i have a cable modem so i wouldnt want to buy one...satellite is garbage...i pay $50 for 6 MBPS download & 512 KBPS upload...Casey wants to pay $50 for 512 KBPS download & 128 KBPS upload....come on its a rip off boss...but if its a write off go for it...

Okay, no name calling here. It's not nice, unless of course your ex is now his girlfriend ;)

Anyway, upload speed is NOT ONLY for uploading files. It's a function of download speed. It's used to acknowledge your downloaded data. In other words, if you download something, your computer needs to send (upload) a packet whether you received it correctly or not. Like when you talk to someone, you will be very irritated if you don't know whether he/she is listening to you or not. Therefore, if you upload a large file or sending e-mail with good size attachment so that you use all upload channel, your download speed will be greatly reduced.

BTW, I'm paying $50 (tax and fees included) for VDSL 1.5Mbps down/ 1.0Mbps up (sustained). Speed is addictive, if you're on dialup now, 512kbps is a very much improvement, you'll be happy. But if you have access to higher speed (at school or work), it will be difficult to accept slower speed at home.

Thanks everyone for your help, yes I know $50 is a rip but it is all I have to go with, I currently have cable but when we move in 2 weeks I will need to stay with something faster b/c I work from home on the comp, dialup will not work, I would just rather pay more for 512kbps, hoping verizon will make its way down into the deserted valley I am moving too.... :(

Since you seem to have made your decision. I am now going to lock this thread, so the discussion does not turn more into for of a big arguement.
