question about zip files

I'm trying to download something to my comp and it says its a zip file. What is that and is it bad to download?????

A zip file is OK to download as long as you have anti-virus software; I guess what I am saying that it is as safe to download as any other file as long as you trust the source. If you have Windows XP, you open a zip file like a regular folder. If you don't, then you can download WinZip and that will help you open the file.

Windows XP treats a zip file like a folder. So once it is saved to your hard drive, you simply double-click it to open.

There was a time when zip files were outdated and there were replaced with "front button" files , but the guys found those hard to open on a chrisis so ZIPS were back.

Try 7-zip (www.7-zip.org) it even opens .rpm files
