I was wondering. I've been going out to more and more restaurants lately using the deals here and a discussion came up today about how you have to be careful around the people serving your food or else they can do something to it without you knowing like spit in it, cough or sneeze at it, initially as a gross joke, but then, after I got home, I didn't find it funny no more and got me worried.

Now, we all know that spitting in people's food is illegal and unethical, but I'm not sure if at times if someone putting some of their saliva on your food or in your drink would be something that you could really pay attention to and be mindful of inspecting before eating. I always wondered if something like this does happen, if eating the food or drinking down the drink could cause any sickness or generally, be bad for your health?

Or are our immune systems able to detect this immediately as we're digesting and flush it out?

I always wondered, but didn't know...sorry if I gross people out, but it's some stereotype that I need some facts of in order to get a good nights sleep.. Not saying this type of stuff always happens, but you never know, and can't say that people who hold waiter and waitress roles don't horse play around from time to time doing this as a prank or a dare or something right?

I think that your concerns are valid...

Try to present coupons "after the meal" if possible to avoid any nastiness.
We inspect our food but haven't found anything yet--except for smaller entree portions and minimal service when the server knows about our coupons. (not always, though)

People with healthy immune systems are probably O.K...except in the rare case of someone transmitting Hep-A. There's already a good system in place to prevent diseases from spreading. Aren't sick workers immediately suspended for legal & liability issues? You're probably going to be fine so please don't lose any more sleep...Good-night;)

Thanks Mirancat. I mean, I know there's rules for sick workers and liability issues, but then, they tend to be followed loosely. Especially at some of the asian cuisines that I've gone to. That's why I ask. If it's only a rare case of something bad happening, then I feel better now knowing that chances are, that worse of the worse and I piss someone off where they slobber on my food, it will be gross and I could mistaken it for the oil and grease that's on food anyways, but I won't get any disease or illness long term.
*knock on wood

Sorry Mike I didnt mean to ignore your post...that cat freaked me out...

I can't speak for everyone but I bartended for 18 years...I never messed with anyones drinks and as far as I know none of the other bartenders or servers did either...I think most people who work in the public are pretty straight up and wouldn't do something like that...its gross and we wouldnt want it done to us...

a "prank" like that could at the very least cause you to loose your job...you could really really hurt someone also and end up in jail...

I wouldnt worry...if you feel uneasy about the food then just don't eat at that place...follow your instincts when it comes to people...

well, as long as it's not a health hazard then it's good to know.

I'm just worried about the what if's...

in this case, would someone like that, someone else's germs like that, cause any illness or sickness? That was why I was asking. Thanks

well it would just be like kissing someone. There is always a risk of if they are sick.. would ingesting their fluids cause you to be sick? I think it would be that same principle. so... coupon should be brought out when check comes =D

also.. their tip shouldn't be effected by the coupon either. You are supposed to tip before the coupon is added on.

I'm so glad to find out I'm not the only paranoid one! I especially don't like to eat around cold and flu season. I just don't trust them.

I never even do cookie exchanges for the holidays! I bring cookies but don't take any. You know everyone's letting their snotty nosed kids help..and I know how it is when mine help!

My dh was a waiter and he says it used to happen all the time. And I worked in a food establishment where things were often dropped on the floor and put back when customers weren't looking. Yuck. I'm making myself sick.....

Sorry, I've been forced to hijack this thread due to public outrage...

I was substitute managing a Little Caesars in Spanish Fork, Utah several years ago when their manager when on vacation. I caught an employee spitting in the sauce and I made him clean out the pan then fired him immediately afterward.

Two days later, I got a call from his manager stating that she rehired him and sure enough, he was back on duty. I have never eaten there again.

Yup :yesnod:...when I worked in the supermarket...there were those in the deli/meat counter that if they got a 'rough' customer...they where extra nice and friendly and then spit on their fish and cold cuts, wrapped it up and gave it to them with a smile.

At one point I dated someone who worked in Macy's meat market and it was a well known fact........happened often....

Valuable lesson learned...always be nice to people and wait until after they have finished handling your food......then address any issues....:yesnod:

:eek::ack:

so is it also a lesson learned that no matter how gross or dirty it is when people do those types of things that likely it's not going to hurt you health wise where you need medical attention or should get checked up?

Unless your waitress is Typhoid Mary..:yesnod:...

You'd be surprised by all the unsuspecting 'ingredients' that are 'allowed' to be in our food....meaning insects, animal droppings, etc....... If you actually knew what was in your food, you'd never eat again....:nonod:

So don't think about it, you'll be fine. :yesnod:
