Excellent drive. I got one then sold it to a friend in favor of the 200GB deal that came out a week later for $10 more.

I'd assume that they'll also run the 200GB Seagate $59 deal again in the near future, which might be a better deal for people.

However, the drive itself and the price is excellent, both sizes are the same. It's super fast, and REALLY quiet.

Just got it, and no tax for my state! Will probably get that 200GB too when it goes on sale. Thanks!

Not the Fastest Hard Drive

I have read many reviews on the Seagate 7200.7 plus Hard-Drives.Review for yourself. The drive itself is somewhat slower than many other main-stream drives, however with its low noise and dependability rating you get peace of mind that it will last. Although, it's really not recommended for use in a server setting because of its slow start to seek times it will definitely work ok in the average Desktop setting for most of us. There is also a Hitachi 160GB at outpost.com that is faster than this Seagate, but for most of use it would be hard to tell the difference. So if your goal is to have a quieter system and massive storage along with a 5 year warranty this drive will serve you well for $50.

Just one quick question to you guys I haven't bought segate before but I have a WD 100 gig, problem is it run really slow, even though it have 8 mb buffer. I had the master as the ibm 40 gig and the secondary master as the WD. When ever I try to run files from the WD F: drive it will be slow. For example when I listen to mp3 or movie it will skipping around. WHen I copy things to the WD from the IBM it take twice as long...... what did I do wrong?? the setting ?? the cable??? jumper???? bios??? systems?

Tomshardware.com = Biased as hell.. I stay away from them... AnandTech is better but still don't like 'em...

If you want HD reviews, head over to www.storagereview.com

For the average user, all drives will seem similar in performace (real world) as long as you compare apples to apples (ie. 7200rpm 8MB cache to 7200rpm 8MB cache).. Benchmarks will differ but unless you run different apps or have certain usage patterns you won't really notice anything.

With regards to faifai.. WD Drives are the pickiest jumper drives made.. Didn't used to be, but then they also used to be good drives (years ago). If you only have one CD/DVD drive, make the IBM Pri Master, the CD/DVD Pri Slave, and the WD Sec Master. Also reset the ACPI settings in the bios on the PNP screen. Performance should pickup.. Make sure your also using 80pin cables and not 40pin. Remember IDE based systems are heavy hitters to CPU usage, don't let that 'onboard raid' setup make you feel any better in that dept either. One more thing to look at when your pc boots is the post screen, make sure it lists LBA as the mode for both HD's.. If it lists CHS or Large, I hope your runnin *nix otherwise it needs to be redone.

I have two roms one NEC dvd the other liteon..... so I set pri master as ibm slave as nec and sec master as wd and slave as liteon........ I have did everything i could.... but no help at all so I am thinking about the segate

just do yourself a favor then and toss the ibm and wd drives.. get something worth having..

Agreed. :)

This is my first Seagate in recent history, and after the quality, speed, noise, and performance of this drive, I don't think I'd buy anything else.

Compared to my Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM, it's insane.

Got the segate.... stupid sales over there said they have them sold out, so I walk around and look for other stuff, when I come back I saw some other sales carrying couple of them out to customers....... I go and ask him and pick one up. The 200 gig deal you guys talks about is from the past right?? I am looking forward to get the 200 gig too, so I might just put the 160 gig aside and wait a little bit.

Maybe you didn't read the article...but it shows there that the 7200.7 series has some of the fastest read/write speeds of any PATA drives on the market - it even beats out the WD Raptor a few times. The only negative point is slightly high random access times, which don't even have much of a bearing on performance anyways. I've had a 200GB 7200.7 since shortly after they were introduced, and it's served me well. Maybe I should add another one if they happen to have a deal soon...

Well, there's part of your problem right there. A slave device will often/usually slow down the master it is connected to. I strongly recommend that you group the hard drives as master/slave on the primary channel, and put the NEC and the lite-on on the secondary channel.

Untrue for IDE interfaces.. True for SCSI interfaces.. The IDE bus has the two (these days, sometimes 4 with a chinzy raid chip) interfaces, some devices are just plain picky. There isn't enough bandwidth really utilized with IDE to state that one device can slow down the other on the interface level. The drives may not like it and give you grief, but the bus just says "i've got my irq and MA, have after it boys".. Another problem with IDE is it requires CPU cycles, so the overall state of the system can cause grief as well.. With SCSI drives, if you stick a U320 and a U160 drive on the same chain, yes, you'll knock the U320 drive down to U160 speeds. But also remember that SCSI drives use a seperate processor for i/o and translations so you could be rendering a Bryce image and still defrag the scsi drive without problems.

I stand by my original suggestions and statements. Ditch the no good IBM and WD drives.. LiteOn makes nice stuff as well as NEC.. Optical drives are much less picky about how they're setup vs HD's.. Some HD's don't care either as long as you set the jumpers right, others (alla WD) are picky f'ers even when you set the jumpers right.

I would just like to point it shipping was $8 for ground shipping for me, and $9 for 2 day shipping. I live in Cali, so don't be shock if it's more than $5 for shipping. Tax was another $10 for me to, :(

:D Checking other sites this Seagate ST3160023A-RK (retail box) is still a great buy, even with tax and shipping cost. Other sites are selling the OEM (no ATA-cable, CD install disk, or install guide and manual) version for more than $100 and the retail version is $120-$145. I received and installed it today and it is very very quite. The CD also includes back-up software.
