Am I mising something or is the math just wrong?

$139.99 - $50 - $40 = $49.99

Same math on the Best Buy web site. Are we supposed to buy the hard drive somewhere else and use the rebates? Pricematch maybe?

lately i've been seeing deals on new 250/300gb 16mb drives for around $69 -99. i couldn't tell you where, but i'd wait for one of those. if you're going to buy a new drive now you might as spring for a "next-gen" drive. if you don't care about the speed of the drive, this listing isn't a bad deal. I wouldn't be buying many PATA drives at this moment since we'll all be switching over to SATA soon. Although, even if you switch, you can buy an enclosure and make an external drive.

I spoke to Maxtor Customer Service today about a 160GB drive I have that I bought at Staples (on a Spoofee deal I believe, thanks Spoof!).. Anyhow- it won't format anymore, so I phoned them to get an RMA. This was a regular DiamondMax, not the Valueline.

Turns out they have vastly different warranty coverages on retail vs OEM sales. She told me Staples, BBY, CompUSA, etc. sales all carry a 1 year warranty. Other sales from what they call "distributors" all carry THREE YEAR warranty. An example is Tiger Direct.

Quite a difference.

I think I've bought my last Maxtor Retail drive! Guess all I can do is trash this 160GB drive which is a little over a year old. I recall back in the old days when 8GB was a MONSTER drive, I commonly returned drives 3-5 years old. The really nice part was too that after that long, they companies typically could only give you a much larger drive in return since they no longer made the small ones. Turn in an 8GB, get a 20GB back!

I guess the industry has quietly gone to much shorter warranties. Ticks me off to have to pitch out a 160GB drive after that short a time. I also bought some IBM's and other drives from Spoofee tips and I believe they still have decent warranties. This may just be a Maxtor ploy. Not sure about WD..
