This is a very good deal for a 160GB SATA drive and Seagate is the top manufacture of HD's as of right now.

Well, actually, I always swear by Hitachi. They make the quietest drives on the market, and in my opinion some of the fastest and most reliable. My Hitachi SATA II is, in fact, so quiet that I don't hear it spinning when it's working at all. I constantly have to check LED indicator to make sure it does work, it's a trip I tell ya! :)

Seagates are second best, in my opinion, followed by WD. And Maxtors...well, ok....I'll leave it at that ;)

gr8nrg,

You made the front page. :)

Where the HD is made might matter...

Do you know where is the Hitachi HD made in?

I never had Hitachi, so to me Seagate's the best still. But I just purchased a Hitachi 200 SATA HD last weekend and have yet to install it and decide whether it's gonna change my mind.

Just a note from my experience: check where the Seagate HD is made! I found that their Singapore-made is better (i.e. last longer and make much less noise) than their elsewhere-made HD.

Depends on the model and particular batch. Both of my Hitachies are made in Malaysia and they are GREAT! Install yours and see for yourself.

But, I'm going to jump on his Seagate deal and see if I like it. By the way, please note that this drive supports NCQ :bigok:

Yup, this is a great deal indeed, no doubt about it.

Is NCQ something that is self sufficient? In other words, would one need compatible hardware, like motherboard etc., to go with it before you can bring out its full potential?

Thanks!

Yes. You need your motherboad to support NCQ. Only Nvidia4 and certain Intel chipsets to my knowledge currently support NCQ, but performance increase from enabling it is very noticable as compared to regular SATA drive.

Hard Drive Manufacturers

I was looking for a replacement drive for my wife's computer this afternoon and started with what I thought was a good deal on a Seagate 160GB at Amazon for $69.99 shipped after rebate (Fry's saves me the shipping, but costs me sales tax).

Then I went to Newegg to see what they had and compared reviews of Seagate, Maxtor and Hitachi, which I've used branded as IBM and Hitachi for several years. I know some people like Western Digital, but I've never had one. Don't ask why.

My wife's hearing is very sensitive and I remember trying out a Seagate drive on her computer a few years ago. She couldn't stand it! It's a shame, because the 5 year warranty is nice. I don't have a problem 'cause I can turn down the volume on my hearing aids!

After reading a large number ot Newegg customer reviews I decided to go with Maxtor. In this case a "small" 80GB drive is plenty for her needs.

Of course, Maxtor is being bought by Seagate, so I wonder if the drives will stay the same.

LOL Wow! You have opted for a "tractor-noise" Maxtor?!

good luck!

after maxtor bought quantum's hard drive division a few years back, they just scrapped the quantum line and continued producing hard drives under the maxtor name. the same went for hitachi after buying ibm's hard drive division.

have any of you tried samsung's hard drives? they don't come in the ultra high capacities, and they aren't quite as the hitachis, but they are supposedly the quietest 7200rpm hard drives on the market.

Do Not Buy Maxtor With Rebate!!!!!!

On top of that, just another little piece of advice: DO NOT get yourself involved with Maxtor's rebate, EVER!!!

I had really Bad Experience with the Maxtor rebate department, not once, but TWICE!!! That probably costed me ~100 bucks!!!

And out of the tens of HDs I've had, the only one really died on me was a Maxtor.

In short, I'm one customer they're gonna lose forever! And one who will keep pumpin' Maxtor's bad reputation! :secret:

Ooh, and by the way, this Seagate HD is made in Thailand. Or as they put it "a product of Thailand". Nowadays, you just don't know whether or not it's really made in Thailand. Sometimes, "made in Thailand" could just mean that they put in the screws... But since you've had two of them and they're superb-quite, then this one should be alright ;) Afterall, this Seagate HD IS a good deal!

I can second that one...

I also had a problem with a Maxtor rebate. The only time that I've ever had a rebate not come through for me...

Went today to pick one up. It's the strangest thing, on the shelf they had soem batches made in Thailand and some in China. The once made in Thailand had an original price sticker of $129.99 and Chineese model was $119.99. Both, of course $99.99 - 50 MIR at the register. The Chinese ones also had substantially highr serial numebrs (made later ?) I'm not sure which one is better. I went with Chinese make thinking it's newer. Any ideas?

Sorry, no idea  ... interesting finding though
