Skype is now offering unlimited calls to US/Canada for $2.95 / month.

No contracts.

Note : By unlimited, they mean 10,000 calling minutes / month. Thanks Uleepera for the information.

I really don't think they should be able to use the word "unlimited".

* The legal bit – as part of our fair usage policy you’ll get up to 10,000 calling minutes per month.

That is their "Version" of unlimited. Not to say that it's not a good deal... but their headline says unlimited and it's not.

The sad thing is that almost every VOIP provider has that same stipulation, even when they advertise "unlimited."

Although, you have to figure most people would be hard pressed to make 5.5 hours of calls per day (10,000 minutes/month). Maybe 5, 6, or even 7 hours one day, but 5.5 hours every day? That would be tough to do.

Are they legally ok to do that?

"UNLIMITED PHONE CALLS... oh sorry, if you read the fine prints it's actually 1000 minutes."

Anyways, thanks for the information. Updated post.

10000 minutes should be enough for most people. It's more than 6 hours per day you can talk to people for a month. Does anyone have first hand experience on the voice quality when calling people on their cellphones?

is that a challenge? :sus:

does the Guiness Records people keep track of the world's longest
phone conversation? :) :) :)

I created an account since my cell phone isn't working atm. They give you your first call free for 10 mins. I tried it and the quality is good, I can hear just fine on my headset. My cousin said he could hear me just like I was on my cellphone. I'll probably sign up for the 10000 min/$3 month plan till my phone is fixed. They give you a month free if you pay for 2 months, $6 for 3 months so $2 per/month.

The price is definitely unbeatable compared to any other VOIP service (by a long shot). The only benefit of a "regular" VOIP service over skype is that you need to have your computer on to use Skype. I do believe, however, that there are some Skype phone adaptors that will allow you to plug a regular phone or cordless phone to your computer via USB and then use Skype, but again your computer must be on to use it.

Still, price-wise you can't come close to this deal.

Yeah, just get a skype phone adapter or a skype phone for under $30. (wifi phones are like $120 ish and worth it imo)

10000 limit is to discourage commercial use.

They have Skype for WM5+ (Windows Mobile) which means any handheld with a speak and a microphone that can somehow connect to the internet could be a phone... That being said I have skype installed on my Sprint Treo 700wx and it works fine.. plus it bypasses Sprints minutes during "normal" usage hours.

Wel, it's about the same deal as before. If you were a new acccount they charged you $36 and gave you 12 months of unlimited calling (when it works, which is nearly always) and $12 for international calling, assuming you do that.

MagicJack, when it works, too, is a better deal. $40 first year, $20 subsequent years and you get an incoming number, caller id, voice mail, etc., etc. and you can easily connect a regualr phone or cordless phone.

I can spare a PC for making calls but how I will make my wife understand that overall cost of the phone is still cheeper when combined with the electricity usage for PC and monitor. I cant wait for cheeper skype phones..... anyone know some please post...

I still think it's a good deal, but they should just state in plain words "up to 10000 minutes a month for only $2.95 / month", and I'm sure they would have gotten the same CTR.
