Social Groups was an "interesting" new feature that came with vBulletin 3.7.0

It may sound cheesy, but let's stay as one group and not separate into sane or crazy, etc. :)

If you have an interest, posting on the off topic section should get the necessary response from people with similar interests.

If we start getting 100s of posts about automobiles, 100 posts about kids everyday, we may revisit this or just breaking off topic into different subjects

but for now, Social Groups Disabled!

There were a number of benefits of the "social groups" feature.

Unfortunately, we have a number of "graffiti artists" among the spoofee crowd. These people feel the need to hijack all threads that discuss something outside their own interests. The social groups allowed discussion to take place without the need for freqent reminders to "get back to topic."

Can you figure out some similar way to allow users to keep focus where they intend? (The obvious answer would be "moderators," but even though they try, it seems they can't keep up with the graffiti.)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Heh heh, well yes I do kinda feel strongly about it, in the past few days I have really seen a peak in interest, I believe new features have the ability to draw members in more, and the more visitors to spoofee, the better! I really believe social groups, the ability to adopt friends, personal messages, rep points and all the such has and will continue to not only draw this group closer together, but also encourage more people to become a part of that group, bring back the groups Mr Spoofee, PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would get on my knees and beg but someone may imply something and ya can't see me anyway, LOL!

:hmmmm2: Did we also loose the ability to leave messages for our "friends & contacts"?

**my bad, still there**

I think the 'social groups' are an interesting feature as well. The problem with it, that I had found, was the ability to keep it 'exclusive' which keeps some people out. That does not encourage "friends" but encourages "cliques".

Is it possible to do it with it all being 'public' (disable the private feature)? Meaning, anyone can enter a desired group to chat?

I think something like that would keep a lot of the 'idle chatter' off the main board (or reduce it a great deal) and keep the regular posts/threads more 'on topic'.....

Just a thought.

**More of a 'chat room' feel rather than a 'social group'....instead of names like the 'in crowd', 'out crowd', cool, dweebs, etc. which can create hard feelings, have it more like the red room, blue room, A room, B room, etc.

I agree about keeping the social groups. Initially I thought they should be removed but if they were kept open to everyone they could be a lot of fun. I like the idea of smaller chat rooms where people can stay on subject and if other members are interested they can join. :)

I think it's a good idea to remove private groups. It doesn't matter whether the group is totally innocuous or tongue-in-cheek or even inflammatory, the past few days have shown that someone is always going to feel snubbed and left out by a private group. Maybe it wouldn't have mattered if there had been 30 private groups, or even just 30 groups of any kind, but we only had 2, at least until late last night when a 3rd group was added.

But the idea of chat rooms/open social groups is a good one. Maybe we can find a way to not throw the baby out w/ the bath water? The admins could even start a few groups themselves (e.g., "computers", "TV shows" and "cocktail lounge" (you're welcome, Preco!), etc. etc.) and people could add new ones as needed. We already have a few threads that would work great in the group format, like the Friday & Saturday threads.

Wasn't there a chatroom feature at one time?
I think it died from nonuse.

I would like to know how all this came about anyway? I mean was there something someone did or said that someone else didnt like? Just curious
It seemed like harmless fun. ;):convinced:

I also liked the idea of the groups, it kept the off topic posting down and was harmless fun to an extent. I thought it would have been nice to have a Friday/Saturday night party group, kinda like we used to in the threads. :(

The reasons Spoofee stated above were the reasons they were turned off. I think the whole concept of being able to excluding certain members, by making groups invite only was a big problem too. People should not have to feel like outcasts here just because they do not fit into a certain clique. :)

Were the social groups also visible to 'guests'? That would've been a plus as well, being a registered member to read the posts.

Not sure, as a super mod I had different abilities than regular members. :proud:

...Does that explain the Tinker Bell fuzzy slippers and g-string too? :hmmmm2:
