Sony DVD+ and - Burner

I don't have the exact specs, but I think this is the only one Sony has for now. It's an internal one. I see one of Livewarehouse (I think) selling for $165. I think that's a good deal, but are there any other places where I can get a rebate also? I'm really cheap when it comes to buying things, so I'm always trying to find a way to get it a the lowest.

pioneer DVR-106

might want to get the pioneer DVR-106 instead. The sony might be marginally cheaper, but the pioneer burns disks that have more compatibily with stand alone players. also, you can use crappier (cheaper) media and the pioneer will still burn great disks. also, ive seen in some reviews that it burns slightly faster than the sony. you can get this baby at NEWEGG. for 169.99 free shipping. i got it at newegg for like 224 the first week it came out. it has dropped price since then and now its a sweet deal.

Thanks ~bo. I will get that then. But what are the pc requirements for it. I have a very old pc, but still very good (could handle sony 52x burner with no problems. It's a PII 266Mhz with 224MB of ram.

What cables will I need for it? Are the the same ide and power cable as cd burner drives because I have some spare ones.

sorry if this is too late, havent checked forum in a while

all you really need is a decent power supply, but if you dont have a lot of hardware or fans, you should be good. it runs at ata66 and most other burners run at ata33. the ide cable you had your 52x burner attached to should do ok.

it'd be nice to run windows xp (NTFS) to burn dvds, im guessing your system is not running that. you also need a large harddrive. i dont know what you plan to use the burner for. if you plan to backup movie dvds, have at least 20gig or moreof free space. a movie is 8 gig, another 4.5 after you compress, so the space is taken up quick.

So it will work then. I just want to get a dvd burner because I have lots of old files which are huge and they are taking up space (I have over 50CDs now). I have a 120gb hd on my old pII 266mhz pc. It has 224mb of ram so hopefully that won't make it cause any errors.

I will get a dvd burner in that case then and hopefully it will work fine. I have a windows xp laptop but I will then need to look for an external dvd burner. Any good ones out there for cheap prices?

windows xp, or any other os with a ntfs files system is the best because it can recognise files larger than 4gig. I typically have iso's of dvd's that are 4.3 gig so a fat32 file system cant support that. if you're just backing up old files with say, nero6 or your burning software of choice, your setup will work just fine. :)

As far as external burners, i believe a company (pioneer or plextor) i cant remember which has a burner that is based on the pioneer a06. it can use firewire or usb2.0, but its rather new and i haven't researched it yet, but im guessing its expensive. ;)
 
Hi ~bo, 4 gigs is a huge file but it's a dvd so it's no big surprise. I have files that are smaller than that in size. But it adds up when you have lots of files. Does Nero 6 support dvd burning?
 
Yes, Nero 6 supports every DVD burning feature you'll need.
