Not exactly a deal, but if you are planning to purchase a Sony PSP as soon as it launches (03/24/05), here are some locations and what they are offering. Not all locations may not be doing this.

- Bestbuy - Opens @ 8am - $249 for system and will be giving out $5 off coupon for PSP games.
- Circuit City - PSP + Twisted Metal Game for $289. Buy 2 PSP games, get a $10 gift card.
- CompUSA - $249 for system - 10% off all PSP Games.
- Gamespot - Some are reporting that they will open early (7am)
- Toys R US - PSP Value Pack for $249
- Walmart (24 hour versions) - are selling at 12am at night. Some stores that are open until 12am normally are planning to stay open an extra hour for this.

If I could write my own discs- you know, for backup purposes ;) , or so I could watch movies I already own- I would totally be getting one.

It's mighty complicated, but -
  • Buy a 512mb or a 1gb memory card for the ps2
  • Get ahold of some video converting program (I use FlaskMPEG)
  • Rip your DVDs to your computer (DVDDecrypter does this well)
  • Convert the DVD to the appropriate video format and size for the PSP
  • Put it on your memory card
  • Watch it!
It's not as easy as I've laid out here, there's entire forums devoted to discussing this video conversion stuff for the PSP, but I plan on working all the bugs out in a month or two when I buy one. I can't wait to watch my full length DVD movies on there.

Will DVDShrink do the same thing as DVDDecrypt does ? Create an ISO image - and then use some converter to shrink that ISO image into the PSP video format (which is?)

I'm off to Best Buy to pick up a PSP right now...

Say, Vin, the PS2 doesnt have an MMC slot, does it? Do you mean PSP instead? I also didnt know that the PSP had an MMC slot. But if its resolution is 320x240, Ive already got a full library in that res. I convert many movies and sci-fi and anime TV shows to 320x240 for playing on a Pocket PC. Its actually a LOT easier than youve laid out above. I can have a DVD ripped and encoded for 320x240 in just a few hours using only one program. If you know how to use usenet, theres a huge selection made available by me and a few others.

Well, DVDshrink makes an ISO of a DVD9 by reducing the framerates, etc to make the files smaller so they can fit on a DVD5. This would be a waste of time if all you want to do is rip your DVD. Feel free to email me for help ripping and converting.

The PSP resolution is 16:9 (full on widescreen) but the pixel res is variable. Apparently, it's not the resolution but the total number of pixels in the video frame that dictates how happy PSP is with it. 320x240= 76800 pixels. 480x160= 76800 pixels too, so it WILL play, but the encoded file must be hacked first (see links below). This also makes other resolutions available of course, and as long as each dimension is a multiple of 16 it seems to play back ok.

Heres a couple of links to what you want.

Oh, I meant to say PSP. I just went back and corrected my earlier post - sorry.

Anyway, LiveSquid's right, you can just use one program, but I use two seperate ones (FlaskMPEG and DVDDecrypter) just because I've been using them for a while, and I know they work. One program takes the files from the DVD to your comp, while the other converts the files from your hard drive. You can simply use one program to convert from the DVD directly, but I've noticed it goes faster if you convert it from the hard drive instead of from the DVD.

Also, DVDDecrypter doesn't change any information from your DVD, it simply copies the files down. But, as the name says, the files are encrypted so the program DECRYPTs them in order to bring them to your computer. This is similar to inserting a data cd, and copying it's contents to your computer - nothing more.

And thank you for the links, LiveSquid. Very helpful!

A few years ago, I would never imagine a hand held could costs more than its primary console...this thing costs even more than a slim PS2 console bundle pack from costco! So amazing...

the smaller it is, the more it costs. Aint miniatuization great?
