Still struggling with my picture project

I'm giving up on the photo sites, partly b/c the combo of dial-up & this old computer makes uploading virtually impossible, and also b/c I can't find a site offering cheap 5 x 7 deals...

So now I'm thinking about getting a cheapy dedicated photo-only printer and making them myself. Might even save money, with the large volume I am planning...

Does anyone have one, or know anything about them? Do the pictures/colors last as long as pictures developed normally? Are they sharp, clear, realistic looking? Is there a particular brand you know to be good? Is this an insane idea?

Heidi, Do you belong to Costco? They have a photo center here and they're real reasonable. Besides, doing it yourself is time consuming and you 'eat' your mistakes. If they mess up at Costco, they 'eat' it..

When you figure in the cost of ink & paper, no you don't save much, I think it actually costs more.
