If you have an Gmail account, Google is now making it free for you to make phone calls through it.

Gmail voice and video chat makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family using your computer’s microphone and speakers. But until now, this required both people to be at their computers, signed into Gmail at the same time.

Isn't available in my account yet, but does look like a quick useful feature.

Does anyone know if this is gonna be rolled out on our Spoofee mail accounts?

@JdgM3nt4l I sent an email to Google about this. Thanks.

This application enables people to call from their gmail account to any US number for free

Google responded with "If you’re using Google Apps for your school or business, then you won’t see it quite yet. We’re working on making this available more broadly - so stay tuned!" Not sure if this means in a few weeks or few months.

Can this be used as a number to give people when you don't want to give them your phone number?

I don't know about Google Chat but I've been using Google Voice http://google.com/voice for over a year now and it is great! With Google Voice you choose a local number for incoming and outgoing calls and it can be forwarded to your home phone or cell phone so you don't need to be tied to a computer. To answer your question, yes, you can use this number to give out in place of your real phone number. With Google Voice you have a lot of power with your incoming calls as well, you can block anonymous, screen your calls, use Google Chat to make calls over your computer and setup custom voicemail. USA and Canada calls are 100% FREE!
