Tivo requires a monthly subscription doesn't it? I looked on their site and it says 12.95 a month or 299 for a lifetime subscription. Also another thing I've always wondered about, but couldn't find on there site is this:
I've got digital cable, and a box to decode the digital signal. I don't think Tivo would be able to decode the signals itself, so what does it do? Does it just have an infrared controller, and just manually change the channel when recording?

You should be able to hook it up as an output to the digital cable. It's kind of a pain, but it would do it. Also remember that this one can't record HDTV. You have to have a land phone line for initial set up - no VOIP. I love TiVo, but because of the HDTV & phone issue, we had to get a DVR.

Yeah, with what TiVo service costs, it's almost worth it to get DVR from Comcast for $10 a month even though it's a disaster.

I'm just waiting till I get my digital cable promotion sorted out, so I can actually get it.

it will work with digital cable. i have my tivo hooked up to a digital cable box. you run the video out of the cable box, to the video in on the tivo. then video out on the tivo to video in on the tv. the tivo has an "ir blaster" that you put in front of your cable box. when the tivo decides it needs to change the channel it uses this thing to send signals to the cable box. the cable box thinks that it is the remote control telling it to change the channel.

you are correct on the monthly subscription. $12.95/month or $299 lifetime. the lifetime is misleading though. it's only the lifetime of that tivo unit. so if 2 years down the road tivo comes out with a new series of units, your lifetime subscription isn't transferable. Also if you have more than 1 tivo, you pay $12.95/month on your first and $6.95 on the others.

as far as the voip thing. tivo officially says you need to use a land line phone for initial setup, but they're lieing. I've set up multiple tivos using an ethernet adapter. the trick is when you're going through the set up and picking a number for it to dial, ad the prefix ",#401". this tells the tivo to use the ethernet adapter.

This is a great deal. if i didn't already have 2 tivo's i'd be all over it.

Comcast DVR TERRIBLE

Take it from me I used tivo for years using DirectTv until I was lured away by Comcast with rebates and disounts. I switched to thier DVR and almost immediately regretted the decision. Comcast DVR feels like an ALPHA release of DVR software and is no where in the same league as TIVO. The comcast DVR (after 5 units, yes I said 5 units) finally stopped freezing up but still occasionally muted itself during recording and could only be un-muted by powering off the unit. Also the HD features are nearly useless, when on a HD channel the guide button no longer works as do most of the other features, you may be able to pause if you are lucky. HD is so much data it seems like the motorola box just can't handle much more then simply playing it in realtime. Do some google research, my problems are not isolated, they occur from the west coast to the east coast. The recording of shows is awful to, it always cut the first 2~3 minutes off the front of shows from starting late and was not smart enough to record the new episode of Smallville on the WB but instead recorded the repeat from 3 years ago that was showing on ABC Family Channel. Tivo's intuitive guide and recordfing of season passes far surpass anything this unit does.

I have digital cable and use the IR blaster (I was leary at first but it works well). I may not have HD recording but to be honest the problems with the motorola did not make that feature worth it. I can swap shows between units now and listen to my m3's off my server or brwose pictures. I can schedule recordings on either of tivos from anywhere in the world and bottom line it works.

Plus I doubt motorola or Comcast will be spending much money on the software on these boxes since Comcast just signed a deal with Tivo. By mid 2006 they will have Tivo software running on these motorola boxes, a concession by Comcast I think that they are having problems with motorola software and want something that works.

HutShop.com still has the Tivo 80 hour box for $74 after rebates until end of this month. The Circuit City 40 hour box is nice, but you'll only get about 20 hours of recordings at a decent (medium) quality. You'll want to either delete shows sooner than later, or you can program the box to delete them for you.

If you don't need to save programs, then no biggie..get the CC one for free.

You could always just get a dvd recorder, panasonic is comint out with new models in may.

why not just get a tv capture card and record from ur pc?

That solution might be ok if I didn't have digital cable. There's no way for the capture card to decode the signal. Same deal with satellite. At least Tivo (from what others have posted previously) can autochange channels on the digital box. This is kind of important as the main reason to get this type of thing is for convenience and to watch the shows when you want to watch them without having to do anything else. I like the idea of being able to select a program from a list, and just clicking record. Definitely nicer than setting your VCR to record at xx:xx time and having your cable box also be on the channel at that time. I still won't be getting a Tivo as this process is still a bit crazy. I can't wait until cable cards become the next big thing. Then you would be able to plug your cable card into your Tivo, and it can access your digital cable.

You have to connect the TV out to the PVR card and that works fine.

If anyone wants to make their own PVR/DVR using their PC, here's how you can do it. :secret:

buy a Hauppage brand PVR 150/250/350/500 CARD. they are sold in bundles too, which comes with everything that you need to set it up. i know PVR150 comes with everything in its retail box though, the others, you may have to buy a bundle.

it comes with Remote/IR Blaster/Software. all you do it install the PCI card, connect it to TV out from your cable/satellite box, plug TV out from your PC to your TV. place the IR Blaster in front of the IR reciever of the box and you are all set. install the software and rock and roll. your PC is now your PVR.

it seems like the price of this item went up to $199. Then its not free anymore! What does this thing do anyway? Do you know more about it? Can it play dvds and stuff?

I called our local CC and they didn't have any in stock. They also did a search and none of the CC's in the city have any. :(

Sorry to hear that Kage_

=(

you know, i can't even find this particular TiVo model on the CC website anymore (click on the item using this link & you'll see what i mean):
http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/N/40230885/context/99230885/rpem/ccd/shopbybrand.do

it seems we can't order this online anymore. so if anyone is interested in this, you'll need to contact your local CC's to see if they still have any in stock.

I should point out one small error in the original poster's post. The Circuit City rebate form clearly states that it is valid ONLY for purchases made between 4/21/05 and 4/23/05. I found this out the hard way when I ordered this today (4/24/05) and then I read CC's rebate form. A frantic call to CC to cancel this order immediately followed and I was able to walk away from this

So for a net price of $99+, I would rather get the 80 Humax DVR ;)
