I think it's clear that BlueRay has won. I wouldn't touch HD-DVD with a 10 foot stick.

This has no HD 1080P out, so what ya have is a $150 progressive scan player basically...

Jeez. 1080i and 1080p look the same!

Blu-Ray has not won, they are leading though

Leading what? Where are the Blu-ray deals? I surely haven't seen any. I know some stores are carrying more BR than HD, but I wouldn't call it either way right now.

blu ray...not hd...trust me and other post

The reason you are not seeing any blu-ray deals is because HD-DVD is discounting like crazy to try to get back into "the game". Ever since Blockbuster started its exclusive deal with blu-ray, it has been all downhill for HD-DVD.

With the help of PS3, Blu-ray has basically won the hi-def DVD contest. My problem is that no movie is shot in hi-def native anyways, so the Blu-ray you see is basically upconverted with minimal compression. Looks nice, but far from perfect. 1080p is nice tho.

Downhill? Considering Paramount went HD-DVD exclusive, the fact that There are now officially more HD-DVD movies released than Blu-Ray movies, and the fact that HD-DVD players are at the sub $300 price, making it much more attractive than a $500 blu-ray player, I have to say, what data are you looking at that makes you think HD-DVD is "going downhill"?

The fact of the matter is, both formats are going to be in a stalemate for a long time, so anyone declaring a winner this early is very ignorant and ill informed. Blu-ray and Hd-dvd haven't even been in the game yet, so there's no point in saying one format needs to discount like crazy to get back in the game. DVD is still going to be here for a long time...

What?

uh Film has higher resolution than HD...2k film (the standard) is 2048x1556 vs HD which is 1920x1080 max. So actually the movies are being down converted a bit to fit in the HD specs.

Film looks better than HD shot movies. Case in point> Miami Vice, Superman Returns, Collateral, etc etc.

Hooray--I finally have a reason to use this emoticon:

:bs:

Blu-Ray has NOT won this battle. There are more HD-DVD titles available than Blu-Ray, HD-DVD titles can come in combo disks, and for the most part, the PS3 is the only thing keeping Blu-Ray alive at all. However, this nbattle will not be "won" at all because let's face it--just like the DVD+R/DVD-R battle, the eventual result will be an affordable combo drive that can play both. I believe there is a combo drive on the market now, but at an approx. $1000 price tag, it is more expensive than buying individual HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players. Regardless, I think HD-DVD has the edge because of the pricing structure--overall, they are cheaper and COST usually determines a winner. once the players routinely hit the $~100 price point, you will see a clear "winner" between the formats. HD-DVD has been steadily getting closer to that price point. Again, though, the eventual result will be combo players so the "battle" is a moot point.

Now...regarding this deal...
:focus:

This is the same player that Wal-Mart offered during a "secret" sale in early november for $98. Since I had been wanting to get an upconverting DVD player for better resolution on my HDTV, anyway, the price made it a no-brainer. I have been happy with it. My only "gripe" if you will is that it is SLOW to open the tray to eject disks. HD-DVD titles look amazing, though.

^ You're just mad that you invested in HD-DVD :)

I stayed away from the HD formats and finally got a PS3 recently right after I felt that Blu-ray was winning...either way I am waiting for MGS4.

Think of it this way...Blu-ray is supported by 6 MAJOR studios while HD-DVD is supported by only 2. If Paramount jumps ship (Which they will soon) you can say bye bye to HD-DVD.

this is a ripoff. $150 for the A2???

you can get the A3 with 9 DVDs for $150.

old thread

when this was posted (about 4 months ago) this was probably a good deal
