Every year about this time, the debate rages about whether children should go to school in a uniform. Back in the dinosaur age when I was growing up and going to Catholic School, we of course wore uniforms. Never gave it much thought myself back then, we all just looked alike. Now it seems that there is a problem with children, their choice of style, and, fears of abuse/fighting over clothing. Not having school age children anymore, what are your thoughts about kids wearing uniforms to school? Do you have children that you have to tackle this problem head on, if so, how are you dealing with it all? Do schools in your area have a dress code? Sure would like to hear from fellow Spoofee members on this topic. Wishing you and your children a happy, safe, and, healthy upcoming school year! Jeb says you can send him Tastycakes and lunch snacks since he is returning to Obedience School in the fall! :)

I teach in an area where gangs are a significant safety issue. One way that members telegraph which gang they belong to is by wearing certain colors, or displaying certain articles of clothing.

School uniforms are one way that has been shown effective in mitigating this aspect of gang influence.

Uniforms. I am a big supporter of inividualism and nonconformity, but at school there is too much emphasis on attire. Kids establish clicques, pecking orders, etc based on the status that their clothing does or doesnt give them, imo. Plus I remember when kids were getting shot for their Air Jordan sneakers.

are the uniforms a band-aid, or a cure?

I'm for uniforms. Kids can find other ways to express their individuality rather than through clothes.
None of the public schools in my area use uniforms, but the Philly public school system does. My district's public schools have banned a lot of clothes but no one enforces it. Kids are ruthlessly ridiculed if they wear something "wrong".

I think I would be in favor of basic uniforms. Tan or navy bottoms and white, cream or light yellow shirts. That kind of thing. It would be a lot easier getting them ready in the morning. whew There would also be less status nonsense, like Mr. Squid mentioned.

I think uniforms would be a good idea because some parents don't always have the money to buy clothes that are "in" and they can just buy a few uniforms at once..That way they will just have to keep the uniforms clean. :bigok:

There are a number of reasons people cite for uniforms, and gang activity is only one of them. As regards gang activity, uniforms are neither band-aid nor cure. They are only one portion of what must be a multi-pronged aproach to dealing with a societal and cultural issue.

I'm all for uniforms. I don't like seeing girls' cleavage or guys boxer shorts. The school where I teach does have a dress code, but usually if I send a kid to the office for a dress code issue, they fix it on their way there and are sent right back to class with the same clothes, and then I'm told not to make a big deal out of nothing. Of course 5 minutes after they come back to my room, their boobs are hanging out again or their pants are down to their knees. Uniforms could solve a lot of this since uniform shirts have a high neckline and uniform pants aren't the style that tends to sag.

As well, if they really are poor, they can usually get hand me downs from a local church, or just buy two sets of uniforms. No one will notice that its the SAME shirt two days in a row..

I'm all for uniforms. Puts everyone the the same playing field. Also, easier for the parents!!

I'm all for uniforms. This way they can focus more on school and not who's wearing what.

I'm for them too! A few schools in our area have talked about it a lot, but I don't think they've actually made the kids wear uniforms yet.....

Well, both my sons have to wear uniforms. The new policy just started with this school year in our county. There were a ton of parent's protesting it, even a couple tried to sue the school board, LOL, they lost.
At first I didn't like it but now I LOVE it. They wear khaki pants or shorts or dress pants and plain color polos. Shirts must be tucked in and belts have to be worn. My boys look so handsome! They don't like it but since they have been wearing the new "uniforms" this week it doesn't really seem to bother them. Did I say they look really handsome?? LOL...

I don't think it's a big deal and so far there seems to be less problems at school with kids making fun of each other's clothes. Since they all pretty much wear the same thing, I guess they are all quiet.

My oldest started middle school and youngest is in 4th.

I don't really think it's a big deal. Most people have to wear a dress code or uniform to work right?? I don't see anyone getting sued or protesting over that, lol..

Thank you one and all for your perspectives and opinions.:) Having traveled around the globe a bit, I was always impressed watching the youngens head off to school in uniforms and looking very daper and well put together! In my head (and sometimes it is not screwed on straight!) it just seems to make it easier all way around to wear uniforms. Classes start up here next Monday, been seeing the school buses ride around the routes. No, the children here do not wear uniforms, and, there is a Prime Outlet oh about fifteen minutes due east of here where you can see everyone scrambling for back to school clothing and designer wear. I cringe at how much it must cost folks today to outfit the children!!

As a parent, I support the idea of uniforms. We don't have them here, only in the Catholics schools, but not public. I think too much emphasis is placed on fashion at school. Let kids be noticed for who they are and what they do as opposed to what they are wearing.
