We have the Kenmore Upright Bagless model which has been a solid & reliable vacuum cleaner now for over a year. Right now, it's on sale @ Sears for $59.99 (it says the price expires 1/13/05, but I've seen this model "on sale" for this price frequently). Use the $10 off $50 vacuum coupon, and you can get it for $49.99. Is this more than you were looking to spend, though?

update: just wanted to mention that Sears has a couple other vacuum cleaners around that price.
Persian Purple Hoover Tempo™ Bagged Upright, $49.99 w/ coupon
Silver Euro-Pro Transformer Vac™ Deluxe Bagfree Stick Vacuum, $44.88 w/ coupon

update#2: here's a review of this Kenmore model on wsj.consumerreports.org (scroll down to #23). I have to disagree w/ their "carpets" rating - we have mostly carpeting & think it works very well.
#5 is the review of the Hoover model.

ps bagged vs bagless - we've owned both, and personally prefer bagless vacuums. Other people may have other opinions, however.

I believe this should do the trick for your place (we have 3 br's & it has worked well for us. It picks up the dog hair in our place amazingly well). Our previous vacuum, a Eureka, sucked, er I should say didn't suck. It's suction strength was noticeably less than our current Kenmore. BTW, the Hoover got a slightly better review, so if you don't mind the purple color, it may be the vacuum for you. Nevertheless, we are happy w/ our Kenmore, and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Also, btw, Amazon has a cordless, bagless "upright" for around $29.99 (ships free), but this looks kinds short & small, like you'd have to stoop down to vacuum your floors, which probably would be a pain to do. If price is more critical to you than convenience, you may want to consider that one (looks like it got fair reviews from people).

ps "penpencil"? that's kinda cute - maybe I will consider that new name, if you don't mind. Can we change our usernames? Actually, I couldn't find a picture of a pen, but found one of a pencil and thought "ah, close enough". Hmm, I do like "penpencil"...

thanks for the gifs druvans! :) i'm looking through them & already saw one i'm thinking of adding to my avatar!

just wondering, what do you need to combine your vacuum w/ to make your purchase? is there a purchase amount you're trying to meet?

I was thinking of #7 in the list, 33078 $50,
33079 $50,
Which has good rating.

With the exception of noise, these two models do have good ratings.

Funny, item # 33078 (searching online @ sears.com) is, well, a car battery. (Guess that model is OOS, or no longer sold).

33079, the Kenmore Upright Vacuum, Swing Green w/Dark Gray IS available online, but 12 cents shy of the $50 you'd need to use that Sears $10 off $50 vacuum coupon. I'm wondering if they'd let you add an inexpensive item, like a vacuum cleaner attachment or replacement part, to make your purchase amt over $50 so you can use the coupon?

If you want to forgo the instore coupon, looks like sears has a rebate so that this vacuum would be shipped for free.
