And this only spins at 5400RPM. I was hoping for a faster spin speed for that little storage.

Sure, it's b/c this is a "portable" hard drive, which means it is using the standard 2.5" laptop hard drive, which does not need a power cord, and runs purely off of USB2.0. It also fits in your pocket, making it very lightweight and portable.

However, at 27.5 cents per GB, this is not really a deal for 2.5" external portable drives. It should be priced at under 20 cents per GB to be a good deal. For example this drive here. It's a 500GB 2.5" portable drive for $95 shipped, which runs to 19cents a GB. This drive has been offered for as low as $78, which makes it 15.6 cents a GB.

Please don't compare laptop external drives (2.5") to desktop external drives (3.5"), which are cheaper, but heavier and larger and not very portable.

PEACE!!

I have the Seagate FreeAgent Go 500GB (I think that's the most GB you'll get running off with only a USB cord.. and I recommend using a Y-shaped USB cord, using two USB ports for more power) in blue. I got a deal a while back for $70 shipped. I love it. Sure I can get the 1TB for $90 but I'm not always near an outlet (those need to be plugged into a wall to be powered) when I'm out with my laptop. :]

so is this thing like the size of a thumb drive?

From the item description:

Unit Dimensions - 3.38 in. X 5.38 in. X 0.63 in. (86 mm X 137 mm X 16 mm)
Unit Weight - 5.2 oz (147 g)

It's a laptop hard drive in an external case. Some people still call them pocket drives.

This would be a good deal if you're looking for a non-SATA laptop drive. Just crack open the case, remove the drive, and install it. I've already done so with 2 like this that I got last year for $30 each. And, yes, it voids the warranty, so proceed with caution.
