When I taught in Naperville, the school district "petitioned" the state to waive the Veteran's Day holiday off from school. The reasoning is that we needed to be in school to teach the children the value of our military and the service they did for us.
The only "Veteran's Day" activity that occurred was a reading of a description of the history of Veteran's Day over the intercom at announcements, a flag ceremony with only the student council and two local vets and then two trumpets played taps during 9th hour announcements.
IMHO: It's not enough to pay honor to those who served in our country nor is it enough to teach our children the value of the veterans' service.
I ponder if the difference is that nearly everyone served in my father's, grandfather's, uncle's generations (WWI, WWII, Korean War). That is just what the young men did. Now, it seems a little more rare to know someone who is serving in the military.
