At what age do you think it is appropriate to get a game console for little ones??

I ask this because I was going to redeem for a free PS3 and my son is turning 3. I havent really played video games since atari and the original nintendo LMAO (im gettin old) LOL

Now I am not sure if they even have games for that age range. I was just wondering if anyone has any idea about this or is 3 way tooooooo young??!!??!

Just curious?!

A friend of mine used to play on his PS2 with his three year old son. He bought an old N64 controller and "let his son play" while he was playing. It allowed him to play and his son had a blast also. :)

Kadin has been playing the 360 for a year.....and he just turned 4. It was in his own interest that he started playing - and he can move thru the games great. I think there are beneficial skills learned from letting him play, not to mention eye-hand coordination. Him and Daddy have a great time together and there are plenty of games out there that arent violent. Of course, Kadin's fave right now is Spiderman and Friends!
However, we put a limit on how long he plays......no couch-potato-video-zombie!

ok thanks you guys. A friend looked at me like I was nuts for wanting to get my son one. But she doesnt even have a TV so maybe thats why. Thanks for the advice. I definately dont want a couch potato LOL I figure they start kids on computers in elementary school and some preschools so it wasnt that far fetched.

Kadin has been playing games on the internet (noggin.com, pbskids.com, sproutonline.com, etc) for over a year too. He can use a mouse and a laptop - knows the controls (volume, brighten the screen, etc) and can find his websites in the drop down box. He works a laptop mouse better than my parents! LOL

I don't what's the minimum age is, but there is definitely no "upper" limit! ;) :p :ranger:

I let mine play Mario at 3. His mother let him play violent games later cause it was fake violence. The kid became violent as a teenager. I won't say there is a connection, but no more of those games for kids.

A PS3 controller might be too big for his hands.

I agree with you thinking there may be a connection with violent games leading to violent behavior. I was worried about this when Kadin started playing these games - because in all of his Spiderman games it is fighting - good vs. evil type. I explained to him (and remind him often) that it is just a game for pretend, these people are not real like us and you dont go around hitting people. I know that boys will be boys too and they do play more rough than girls, but a line has to be drawn.

The thing I like about the Marvel Alliance game is that when one of the players is out (you play with 4 at a time) that player has a certain amount of minutes til you can go back and get him again. So instead of a player being "killed" I tell Kadin that he is "tired and is resting."

I think it is like everything else we will (or for some have already) encounter - it's all about parental guidance.
