McAfee is the same way. Go for avast. They offer a free home version. You register and get a code good for one year and when it expires, you get a code good for another year. Very good at protecting your computer.
I'd never put anything Norton on my machines. Supposedly they've improved it, but I still wouldn't have it. Peppers the registry with zillions of Norton entries. Norton isn't even any good as a give away.
Lately, I've been recommending to my home clients to use Microsoft Security Essentials. It won't nag you like AVG or Avast. It's free and it has rated higher than McAfee and Norton in December 2009...still waiting for additional results for January 2010.
