My sister works at Nicor, which is a natural gas company in IL, and this came from their IT department so I believe it's pretty credible.
Subject: IMPORTANT - Security threat to Instant Message service users identified
Importance: High
The IS Security group has identified a new worm that is a potential threat to users of Instant Messaging services.
Who is at risk?
Users of any Instant Messaging software (e.g. AOL, MSN etc.)
What should I be on the lookout for ?
A link will appear in a popup message from your Instant Messaging software inviting you to "come see my pictures" or "check this out" or other similarly worded invitations. It will likely arrive from someone that you know.
What is the impact of clicking on the link?
Clicking on the link will cause applications to be installed onto your PC that attempt to connect to a remote host IP address.
A similar popup message with the infected link will also be distributed to everyone in your Buddy List (or equivalent).
What should I do if I think I have received an infected link in an Instant Message popup message?
Please do not click on the link
Inform the IT Service Desk on x4357 or by e-mail, they will follow up with IS Security and inform you if any further action is required.
Thank you for your assistance in protecting our network.
Regards,
IT Service Desk
