I'm looking for a no frills free checking account. Which should I go with? Are there any differences? Does one pay more interest than the other?

I use Washington Mutual personaly. I changed from Wells Fargo about six months ago and I have not regreted the change. I have a free checking account with free checks for life, a debit card that earns cash back with no fees, free bill online bill pay (A wonderful feature), and the people at WAMU are great. At Wells Fargo I always felt like another number, but at WAMU I actully feel like a person. I know this didn't directly answer your question, but I hope it helps.

Is Washington Mutual a national bank with ATMs? I have never seen any. I'm going to college and need a bank with ATMs.

I would go to bankrate.com for the best rate information.

I went to that site but still am not sure how to compare. Both offer free checking. Does one offer more interest than the other? I know the interest is really low, but I guess the more the better?

starsweet, most commercial non-internet banks have really low APY interest rates. The average for BofA is like 0.10

Both their headquarters are down the street from me in Charlotte. They're both decent, but I would probably recommend Wachovia. However, in Charlotte BofA has an ATM on almost every corner.

I'd go for BOA since they offer incentives to open personal checking, savings, and business checking accounts.
Here's on that gives you $100 for opening a personal checking account and additional $25 if you open savings:
http://www.bankofamerica.com/promos/jump/125signup/?adlink=000302072g510000d591

Get a $100 Bank of America check when you open any new, personal checking account with a Bank of America Visa® Check card. Get an additional $25 when you open any new, personal savings account at the same time online, for a total of $125.1 Because you are an existing Bank of America customer, you can save time by adding your new checking and savings account using our online express application.
Remember to verify that the offer code THZ3 appears on this form before submitting. We’ll send you $100 when you open a new, personal checking account with a Check card. Plus an additional $25 if you open a new personal savings account at the same time. But to get your $125 check, you must respond by December 31, 2006.

Agreed. However WaMu is good as well - i used to bank there. Wherever you go will prolly be fine and should depend, as was said, on the representation in your area. With gas these days it will have to be significantly better for you to go with a bank farther away / not where you normally drive. Credit unions usually partner with the Co-op network and have no fees at any member ATMs. other banks have similar associations. Go the the bank's website and use the ATM locator to find out locations and fees.

Do be sure to get these features:
-Free checking
-Interest on checking
-Free online bill pay
-No ATM fees

Any good bank should give you these.
