hello all. after long being a visitor to the site, i have finally decided to register. :claps:

I just bought some old phones from ebay and now i am wondering how to find out if these phones will work in any other country? specifically in India, i wanted to gift these to some friends in India, but i heard that they are probably locked and therefore useless until unlocked. how can i do that?

These are the phones i got:

Nokia 8265
Tmobile/Sony Ericcson T300
Motorola/ATT V60
Motorola/verizon 7860

any help is greatly appreciated.

my uncle uses phones from india. I think all you need to have is a phone that uses Sim cards and an unlocked phone.

you need a phone that uses gsm. it doesn't matter if it's lock or unlock.

GSM bands are important as well because different countries use different brands of GSM. Also, the phone should be unlocked.

India uses GSM900.

Your Sony Ericsson T300 will work in India, as long as it is unlocked and you can get a SIM.

The Nokia 8265 and the Motorola V60 are both old TDMA models, they will not work. Your Verizon phone is a CDMA model. The T300 should do the trick.

it doesn't matter if the phone is locked or unlocked. as long as it works on the 900 and/or 1800 frequency then you're gold

It does matter that it is unlocked. Maybe not if he wants to pay ridiculous roaming rates with his current provider.. but other than that, if he wants to use a SIM from India, it has to be unlocked.

Airtel in India is the weird one with I think 850 band while the rest use 900/1800 band. If you get a quad band phone, you are safe. See to it that its unlocked coz otherwise it can be a pain. Nokia and motorola unlock suggestions are available online. just google. If you planning to go with Reliance, good luck. they don't use GSM. Verizon is no use. Any phone sold by T-Mobile and Cingular/ATT for the GSM Network is a candidate if it has a quad band. Motorola V400, V551 are great to use. Nokias available in the US are only good with Airtel. My suggestion, if you have someone who can find the prices in the used market in India, try that first if you are buying off ebay. Atleast you can beat the guy up if he gives a bad piece, unlike on ebay where you are stuck with what you'd get ;)

first of all, thank you to you all for clarifying all my doubts.

well, the plan is to use a sim from a indian provider.

but now the problem is that the t300 is locked. is there any way to unlock it? so i can use it with indian provider's sim card. i have no plans to use the phone anymore than that.

you can Google something like - unlock t300 - or something else like - how to unlock t300

Looks like you will have to spend a little money to get it unlocked, unless one someone here is a Phreak
