Vice President Biden Announces $250 Recovery Payments to Go to Social Security and SSI Beneficiaries in May
Payments will inject more than $13 Billion into Economy

Vice President Joe Biden and Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, announced today that the federal government will send out $250 economic recovery payments to people who receive Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits beginning in early May 2009 and continuing throughout the month. No action is required to get the payment, which will be sent separately from the person’s regular monthly payment.

"The Social Security Administration and Commissioner Astrue have been working closely with other federal agencies to get these payments out the door in record time and into the hands of folks who need it most," said Vice President Biden. "These are checks that will make a big difference in the lives of older Americans and people with disabilities - many of whom have been hit especially hard by the economic crisis that has swept across the country."

"We have been working diligently to issue the $250 one-time recovery payments as soon as possible," Commissioner Astrue said. "The legislation requires extensive coordination with other federal agencies and I’m pleased we are on track to issue these recovery payments earlier than the statute requires. Soon more than $13 billion will be in the hands of more than 50 million Americans."

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides for a one-time payment of $250 to adult Social Security beneficiaries, and to SSI recipients, except those receiving Medicaid in care facilities. To receive the payment the individual must be eligible for Social Security or SSI during the months of November 2008, December 2008 or January 2009.

The legislation also provides for a one-time payment to Veterans Affairs (VA) and Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) beneficiaries. The VA and RRB will be responsible for paying individuals under their respective programs. However, if someone receives Social Security and SSI, VA or RRB benefits, he or she will receive only one $250 payment. People getting Social Security or SSI should not contact the agency unless a payment is not received by June 4, 2009.

FYI, if you receive both VA and SS disability, you will only get the one payment of $250 but if your spouse receives also, you both get $250. Disabled adult children are also entitled to the payment as well.

Does this also include disabled minor childen (under 18) that recieve their own SSI??

yes minor children who receive ssi are eligable for the one time payment

This is from ssa.gov....No, children under the age of 18 (19 if still in high school) who receive Social Security benefits are NOT eligible for the one-time payment. However, disabled adult children will receive a payment.

Yes, disabled children receiving SSI are eligible for the one-time payment.

I guess if the child is getting social security, then no, but if they get SSI, then yes.

Great, my son only recieves SSI not social security, he has gotten it since he was born due to swelling in the brain from hydocephalus that causes seizures & he has mild ceberal palsy so any little bit helps and this will definetly come in very handy and helpful in this horrible economy. I just wish i knew when it would be coming in May but i guess when it hits the bank account i will know.:ohwell:

I only just missed this. :(

Well, atleast my friends on SSI will get it. :D

Well, I'm not going to count on anything except for my husbands because I know he qualifies. My son is 20 and gets SSI and I'm not sure if he will qualify.

If my spouse and I both receive Social Security or SSI benefits, will we each get a one-time economic recovery payment?

Yes, if you are married and both you and your spouse are receiving benefits from Social Security or SSI, you each will get the one-time payment.

I just hope my partner gets it he is on SSDI and it would be a welcome boost to help us out ...

i wonder if you get your ss check direct deposited if the 250 will be direct deposited too..

"We will deliver your payment in the same way we currently deliver your Social Security or SSI benefit. If we deliver your monthly benefit by check, we will deliver your one-time payment by check. If you receive a monthly direct deposit or Direct Express® debit card payment, that is how you will receive your one-time payment."

Oh Lovely--My EX will get some

I love this government.....My ex gets SSI for being a drug addict. I work 3 jobs to support him still. Now another 250 bucks to buy more. I wish they would spend some of this money hiring investigators to look into the ones scamming the system. Oh would the government save a lot of money there. The ones collecting and working under the table, the ones that really arent disabled and claiming they are. Then jump right over and start going after child support NOT from a desk, then on to welfare. Stop that monkey business working for cash, having all these people that live "NOT" in the home to get benefits. Oh this gets me so worked up. I work so hard to make an honest living and then read another 250 going out for SSI. Fine is you deserve it, but I live in an area where there are a lot of sponges soaking it up for the wrong reasons....I look at that and shake my head because there goes my retirement someday. Heres the icing on the cake~~~~~a local woman here is obese and on SSI because she is oh to heavy to work so she is on the golden ticket. Well she went and had gastric bypass done all paid for by medicaid of course. Now she is normal size. They then went ahead and paid to get her fat cut off her arms, legs, stomach and a boob job made it all pretty for her. An honest working person there insurance that we pay for does NOT pay that it is considered cosmetic. Medicaid footed the bill and fixed her up really nice. So now not only is she skinny and none of her excess skin is hanging thanks to the great government Medicaid (oh I wish I could have that) She is also a welfare queen as well, food card , has gotten the vehicle the whole monty. Proud to tell about it as well. But here is the blinger....SHE IS STAYING ON HER SSI...The whole point for it was she was too obese to work welll HELLO do they not investigate they went ahead paid all this money fixed the problem, but nope still collecting her I'm too obese to work SSI/disability benefits....WHATS WRONG WITH THIS SYSTEM????? To think this is just one case....thousands floating around like that. I'm sure she needs that 250 she probably wants to go gambling or up to the bar. She has alll the time in the world. Glad to vent with my spoofs......:ack:

MY partner worked since he was 16 and through no fault of his own is categorized disabled and although he wants to work he can't - it took us 3 years and appeals to get SSDI and he deserves every penny of it ... and this $250 will come in really handy - I think he has earned it ...

Not everyone on SSI is a scam artist!

My best friend really wants to work, too, but cannot due to a terrrible internal disease with no cure. It sucks, he was forced to give up a career that he loved.
SSI doesn't give him much; not enough to pay for rent & food. He's up for review every couple of years and has had to fight for every dollar -tooth and nail. :argh: Spoofee freebies have helped a little, though...

I don't blame people for being upset with the welfare and disability/retirement system. I lost my medical card because my husband started getting $100 a month from the VA. I can't afford medical insurance and can't work but don't qualify for disability. Luckily I found out that I can go to a local clinic and pay on a sliding scale so at least I can get my achilles tendons fixed so I can at least walk without pain.
They are hoping that everyone will go out and buy a lot of things when they get their $250, but all I can do with ours is get our car fixed. It's gone pretty much before it even gets here.
And YES there are those out there that do not deserve to get welfare, SSD or SSI. But look at this......an illegal alien can go to a VA hospital and they have to treat them. They can also get benefits. I still don't understand that. We can't get anything in their countries.....hmmmmm
