Washington Mutual Bank is offering a $75 American Express Gift Cheque if you open a free checking account by December 3, 2005, and keep it open and in good standing ($1 minimum balance) for eight weeks.

Start an account online (www.wamu.com), visit your local bank, or via phone (call 800-685-1644).

Promo Code: 0043-PEDR-7699

Fine print: one cheque per household. The cheque will be sent by the 12th week after the account is opened. Minimum ballance for the account is $1 or the check printing charges (if applicable). A Visa Check card is free, but usage fees may apply (I don't recollect any on my account).

wow... 8 weeks without a dollar for $75? i can handle this one! thanks twisted logic!!!!

it says minimum of 100 to open an acct- that's a little more than 1 dollar

I followed the link, but no where did I see the promotion of a $75 cheque. Can you tell me where it says that before I attempt a sign-up?

Thanks!!

If you google the bank name and "$75 gift" you will find a few sites (including another deal site that I can't name) that talk about this promotion (and others from the bank). It seems that this may be for new branch openings in specific places, and not like ING's. Look around for yourself and decide if it's worth the hassle to do it in person or through the phone...

I did finally see that if you want to sign up online, there is an 800 number to call if you cannot visit a local branch. I'll call in the morning & see what the requirements are.

I did this offer back in September, but the offer was mailed to me. Got my AMEX check last week. Easy money.

Also did a similar one at Union Bank of California. It was $50, pretty much same deal. Came in the mail as well.

You are correct captainjrl. The offer was mailed to me from a local office location.

I just tried to figure out the problem and applied multiple times online. It turns out the offer is a one-time only offer and unique to myself. I didn't notice that before. My bad.

I got this deal on the snail mail, got another code, when I called they knew who I was, creepy, :D
I opened an account, I welcome 75 bucks for 15 minutes on the phone. Yeah. I opened the account thru the phone. Yeah!

Picked up my $75 cheques at WAMU yesterday... I think I signed up for the account in either September or October... I had received the offer through the mail as well... they called me to let me know my money was ready to be picked up...

SWEET!

So, what excatly is the minimum deposit amount you need for this deal to work? $1 or $100?

I guess it could be $1, the offer does not say.
The Free checking account states that there is no minimums...

The minimum balance to open the account is $1, however I funded my initial deposit with a debit card (they do not allow you to fund the initial deposit with ACH), and that method requires a $100 minimum.

So you could fund it with a method that doesn't require a $100 minimum, or you could withdrawal $99 once the initial deposit clears.

I would recommend that anyone trying to complete this offer go through www.depositwamu.com. That asks you for a promo code. I don't believe you are eligible for the gift if you simply open the account through www.wamu.com.

I was curious to know how much you deposited to get this offer, and what they excatly need to open an account over the phone....Do they need the promo code as well?

Sorry to respond so late, I just realize I had PM's.
Yes, you do need the promo code.
You can open an account over the phone thru 2 ways:
1. You give them ur credit card number and they withdraw 100 bucks and put it on the checking account. (I used this method), then they send you a bunch of papers to sign and you mail them back.
2. You give them all the information, they send you some papers and you mail back all of the papers signed.
After they receive the papers, they send you the Amex Cheques. I did receive them, 75 bucks. I gave them to my wife as a valentines present.

I ocasionally get the same spam mail to the home with the same offer. If I get it again I'll repost it.

Also, I think it would be easier to open the account in the branch and just mentioned the promo code. But I was lasy. Lasy meant the gift took forever to arrived. But it did
