8Ft. Monster 800 HDMI Video Cable for $69.99 Shipped

I really think Monster Cables are ripping consumers off with HDMI. HDMI cables are practically all the same they are all digital with HDCP. The only features that would make different HDMI cables cost more is length and coating really. When I got my PS3 I bought a monster cable HDMI at the store along with it for $80. Then I went to www.monoprice.com and bought the same HDMI cable for $10 with shipping and returned the Monster cables back for a refund when they arrived. They work identically the same.
 
Anyone who pays more than about $10-20 for a cable is getting ripped off.

I can see going with a higher quality, well shielded cable for analog signals. However, digital signals have built in error correction which will correct signal corruption.

As for HDMI/DVI vs. component/VGA. I have been calibrating TVs on the side for over 12 years. I have a trained eye and excellent vision (better than 20/20) and I have yet to see any improvement from HDMI/DVI over a well shielded component/VGA cable. I doubt the average person would ever be able to tell either. However, people think that because it is all digital then it must be better. And yes, it is better, but your eye will never notice.
 
I concur wit the posters. Even more, do not underestimate the possibility
of finding some in your local swap meet. A year ago I got a few high-grade
cables, with gold contacts, for < 10$, from a guy that didn't know what
they were used for (it was a electronics inventory sell-out). :)

Regarding the analog vs digital, remember that some of the newer electronics
will just not display the same resolution signal out of component cables, especially
with AACC (or whatever they call that handshake they do ). Case in point: PS3.
 
No one seems to be talking about the audio. HDMI also carries the digital audio, which is amazingly better with monster, as long as you have a real high end speaker system ($3,000 plus). I agree, that with lower end HDTV and surround systems, you may not notice a difference.
 
The only difference really is the shielding which may help reduce interference of digital signals. But for the most part, they are all the same...even the audio portion. It's digital, so it's basically "yes signal" or "no signal" and nothing in between. No one needs $80 HDMI cables. I got a nice high quality gold contact 6' HDMI for less than $20 shipped from Amazon last year.
 
Another good place for reasonably priced cables is www.shop4tech.com. Using a new Google checkout account you can get an HDMI cable for <$5 depending on length.
 
My girlfriend works at best buy, and can get a $100 HDMI cable for $8. Yes, eight dollars...

In response to "picopir8" above, I agree 100% with the comparison between HDMI and component video. The only caveat is that with component video, HDDVD or BluRay players will not upconvert standard definition DVDs due to copyright reasons. You have to have VGA, DVI-D, or HDMI for that reason. And, for those who need it, HDMI also carries digital audio. I'm using a $6 monoprice.com HDMI cable on my PS3 and it's perfect!

I've bought from www.shop4tech.com many times before. Never had any problems, and you'd better hope you don't get any cuz from what I've heard the customer support consists of an old woman screaming at you and making fun of your intelligence.

You have it backwards, BluRay and HDDVD are "supposed" to not play HD movies over analog connections. DVI/HDMI is required. However that requirement is not being enforced yet and all movies will play over any interface. But many people doubt that the digital connection requirement will ever be enforced. That is because many older HDTVs do not have DVI/HDMI, nor does the "cheap" PS3 or the xbox 360 hddvd player. People with these devices would likely file law suits should the requirement ever be enforced.
