Basic Membership - standard AAA benefits.

Plus Membership - our "top-of-the-line" category includes enhanced member benefits.

Primary - first enrolled member in a household.

Associate - spouse/children (to age 25) living in same household as primary member.

I don't believe they run specials or discounts...

Check out AAA.com for other discounts....

I know people blasted Geico the last time I mentioned this, but I have Geico (which is very cheap for me) and I pay around $14/year for roadside assistance for my 1996 and around $7/year for my 2004.

Only difference is you don't get the fancy maps that AAA offers or the AAA discounts (which don't matter to me).

I have towing benefit from extended warranty, but I still use AAA mainly for their discounts. Using AAA, I get 20% discount on Hertz, which pays for the membership itself after 2 weekend rentals. Hotel discounts, etc.

How old is your car? Have you had a need of roadside assistance before? If not, probably you may save money by taking the chance... Just make sure you're up to date on your car maintenance and you'll be okay.

Some major credit cards also offer fringe perks like road side assistance. Call and ask. It never hurts to do a little bit of research. ;)

I had AAA for 11 years and cancelled a couple of months ago. Reason - Waste of money. In the last 11 years, I had called them for service, maybe 3 or 4 times, once for a jump start [my battery was dead], a couple of times for flat tire [yes, I am lazy and dumb to instal a spare tire]. Anyway, every time I called AAA, the usual wait time was not less than 1hr, even on a clear sunny day when there are not likely many incidents on the roads. On one occasion, it almost took 2.5 hrs for them to come to my home to replace the flat tire [I live Dallas and it was a week day morning and sunny]. When I asked them for the delay, I was told that the AAA guy was searching for my house, rang my door bell a couple fo times, but no response blah blah blah..utter lies. I was eagerly waiting at my front door for him with open blinds and never saw/heard anyone approaching my door.

As far as maps are concerned, in this age of internet and yahoo, who cares for maps and triptix? If you go on a long drive, you get printed maps in the rest rooms or motels. Same for any discounts or deals.

Recently I went to NASA Houston. When I called NASA to inquire about AAA discount, she told that there were 50% off coupons available at McDonalds and it would save me more than AAA, which had only about $5 off per ticket. Wow!

Then it dawned on me. I wrote to AAA that their membership was not saving me anything [I mentioned all the above reasons]. No response from them till today. Cancelled their membership later and am happy now.

BTW, I got a new odyssey with 7yr extended warranty, so dont need AAA at least for the next 7 years.

Just my 2cents of ranting....

Most insurance companies offer roadside assistance nowadays, but you usually have to pay them upfront and get reimbursed (and sometimes the whole charge isn't covered). AAA can be a good deal depending on your situation. Plus it covers YOU and the car you are in. So if you are with someone that doesn't have any roadside assistance or AAA, you can use it if they break down. I still think it's good to have at least the basic version. My x gf had a bad habit of locking her keys in her car a few years ago, so I used AAA 3x for that.

AAA Carolinas will give you two months free if let them automatically chanrge your card for renewal after 12 months.
