Autozone has an oil change special for those that like to save money by doing their own oil change. You can get 5 Qts of Castrol GTX conventional motoro oil and a fram extra guard oil filter for $9.99! Limit of 10 qts and 2 oil filters per customer per day.

Guess I am hitting Autozone on the way to work. This is good quality stuff for a very good price. SOLD!

yup. GTX and fram; that's good enough for any ride.

if this offer was ANY other filter other than Fram, it would be worth the money.

take a look around on Bob is the oil guy forum.

at that price, i would still go to walmart to pick up a 5 quart bottle for $9.97.
unless you can ebay the fram :zip:

walmart 5 qts

walmart sells their own brand of synthetic oil,
anybody knows if it any good?
i think it was about 11 bucks for 5 qts

I would love to learn how to do my own oil change, and it would be fascinating, but for some reason I never get around to it. Also, for the price difference, it doesn't really seem worth it to buy or make a ramp, etc.

I take my car to Firestone with the $12.99 coupon, and with taxes and disposal it comes out to around $16, and they fill it with Kendall GT-1 synthetic blend.

I happen to be lucky, I somewhat know the guys at my local Firestone and they've been good to me. However, for anything serious besides oil changes I take my car to a local repair shop which is fantastic.

long story made short, the construction of the interior walls are low quality,
as is the filtration compared to other similar priced filters.

If you want to know why Fram is bad, read on at bobistheoilguy.com. You couldn't pay me to put a Fram filter on my car. Yes, they used to be good, but not anymore.

As far as the Walmart Synthetic, it is made by Mobil, who makes Mobil 1, which is one of the very best synthetic oils around. However, since Katrina, they've had to switch manufacturers so I would wait a while. Word is that Mobil will take over production again after all the Katrina mess is cleaned up. We shall see.

I have a 94 Geo Tracker with 150k miles on it. I take it to Walmart to get the oil changed because it's only $13 (comes to about $15 after tax and disposal). They use Castrol Oil and Fram filters. My car runs like brand new and they have been changing the oil since there was about 100k on the vehicle and have it changed it every 3000 miles. I was even using the fram filters before they changed my oil. But hey, for an additional $5, I'll let someone else change it.

FRAM works just fine. I have had one problem in the years I have been doing oil changes. That was because the seal was warped and leaking oil. That's also why you check for leaks after you do a change because it can happen to anyone's filter.

Synthetic is also worth it. I have a 1989 Beretta and the engine still runs great. (211K miles).

A minimum $5 difference for someone else to strip your drainplug or forget to push the PUMP button and lunch your engine???? (Both have happened to my friends) No thanks.

I would rather have the peace of mind that comes from doing it myself...not mention that I am a cheap bastard and my father took the time to teach me about working on cars because he ALSO is a cheap bastard. ;)

I can change the oil myself. But I live in an apt w/ no garage and I can't do it in the parking lot. So I have to take it somewhere. I haven't had any problems with Wal-Mart and neither has anyone else I know. So that's where I'll continue to take it. If something happens, it happens. I love my Tracker and would hate for anything to happen to it, but it's not like they'd be ruining a $30,000 car if they screwed up.

It's not like using a Fram filter will kill your engine overnight. Heck, I'm sure plenty of people have seen over 300,000 on Fram filters. It's a matter of: how much futher would the engine have gone if NOT on a Fram. If Fram were complete crap, they wouldn't be in business anymore. But when I can pay $4 for a Fram or $3 for a SuperTech or STP (both made by champion labs) and get a better filter in the process, I fail to see why anyone would use Fram. They use weak glue and cardboard in their filters. If you care, go to the link above. If not, feel free to continue taking your car to Wal-mart. I'm sure your car will last at least 100,000.
I'm just trying to provide valuable info to anyone who's interested.
