I just lost $99 because of Paypal.
Here is my story.

On Feb. 18, 2007, I purchased a $0.99 coupon on eBay.
On Feb. 20, 2007,
I received E-mail from seller of the coupon that they were notified by Paypal that my payment is being investigated for "unathorized payment". I loged on to Paypal to see what they were talking about because I was not notified by Paypal of anything like that. I found there was another transaction for "Dell CPX Latitude P3 Computer" purchased on eBay from someone named Chris McGeary (I contacted him as well, but never heard back). The item number was 250083315936 and the item did not even existed on eBay.
For this transaction, Paypal sent $1,550 ($1,525 for the item and $25 for shipping) to Chris McGeary, and added fund from my bank account for this payment.
Paypal put my account in limited account status and asked me to change my password to remove limited account status.
After removing limited account status, I filed unathorized transaction calim on my Paypal website (this is the only way).

On Feb. 20, 2007, Paypal tried to withdraw $1,550 from my bank account and there wasn't enough fund. It caused my bank account balance to be -1,509.90. Also there were three other payments I made, including that $0.99 coupon. All of them caused overdraft (because $1,550 cause my bank account negative balance). My bank denied $1,550 payment, but paid other three payments and they charged $33 for each of them totaling $132.
I called my bank, and they can only refund half of it as it was not a bank error.

I thought this was over after getting only half of overdraft fee.
WRONG!

On Feb. 27, 2007, Paypal tried to withdraw $1,550 again from my bank account (and this was after I filed unathorized transaction claim), since the first atempt a week ago faild.
This caused another $33 overdraft fee.

By than, Paypal finished investigation (which they probably didn't even take a look in person) after waiting a week for seller's response. There was no possible way to reopen the claim.

I E-mailed Paypal asking them to pay for this, they replied
Unfortunately, PayPal does not reimburse fees for "Non-Sufficient Funds"
for unauthorized transactions. As the majority of banks may waive these
fees in cases where the transactions are unauthorized, we recommend that
you to take a copy of the status of the unauthorized transaction to your
bank.

We value your business and regret that you have had this experience. For
further information on liability for unauthorized transactions, please go
to the User Agreement. Click the Legal Agreement link at the bottom of any
PayPal webpage and click the User Agreement link.

Basically, they will take no responsibiltiy if they cause customers to lose money.

I know it wasn't my computer that was hacked as I do know how to take keep my computer secure. There is not even a ad-ware on my computer and I'm behind firewall. It was clearly their server or interface that was hacked.

Guess I'm lucky I only lost $99. When I searched for other people who had problem with Paypal, some even went bankrupt.

Hear other's paypal horror stories.

Do no or as little as possible business with Paypal.
I removed all my bank accounts from Paypal in case this happen again.

It sounds like the emails I get saying they are from PayPal even though they aren't. They always ask me to log into my acct because of unauthorized access to my acct. They want me to click a link and change my password within the email. I advise anyone to open up separate browser window and log into acct from there. You can forward any emails looking like that to [email protected] and PayPal will notify you if it is phishing mail.

I did get that sort of mail once few years back. I ignore such a mail as I know its phishing.

some phishing mails do use domain names that are really close to real site and some even use https like the real one. But I do know how to tell the difference. :D

That stinks! A few years ago paypal insisted that I give them my bank information to do business. I just refused and stopped using them. I saw no use in them having this information as they had my credit card information.:thumbs_do

paypal:thumbs_do

Hope you can get your money back somehow lambition and thanks for the heads up! :)

Links you gave me are totally unrelated to what I'm saying.
I'm not asking how I can report fraud or complaining about phishing mails.

My paypal account was hacked by some other means and it was clearly Paypal'a fault.
Because of that I lost money, but Paypal say they don't care if I lost money since they are not responsible for its customer's losses.

i had something simalar happen and called paypal to ask why they submitted a withdrawl when the funds were not avalile ..they are suppose to take from the credit card if that happens but they do't and i paid for it in the end...bad business, but a nessasay evil when it comes to online (ebay) purchasing and selling

I just got a phishing e-mail that looked like it was from Paypal, I wrote Paypal and they comfirmed it.

I deleted the bad e-mail but it said my account was in jeopardy because someone from a foreign country was trying to access it and to go to this website to confirm or they would cancel my account.

Paypal responded instantly after I wrote them with:

Thank you for taking the time to contact [email protected]. The email you
reported was not sent by PayPal and is a phishing (fraudulent) email.

We all need to be careful

I get these phishing emails about once a month. It's amazing how genuine they look. The giveaway though is if you hover your mouse pointer over the link they want you to click, the URL will show up and you will see it leads to some foreign country.
When I feel devilish I would click on the link and this leads to another amazing eBay-looking page for logging in. Then I enter a user id and password that have nothing to do with my actual account and in fact sometimes I use words that I cannot print here. :bigok: :teeth: :yo:

I'm with you O'Chutsman. I like to click those fake links and provide fake information. I usually use the password IeatPOOP. I like to imagine the hackers typing in that password when attempting to log in to a fake account. LOL

PayPal will ALWAYS address you by your FULL NAME. One of the many giveaways.

so you're saying you purchased something off Ebay and this still happened to you? i can see how it could happen from a phishy email, but from EBay. wow.

Looks nice, but not compatible with Firefox version 2 and higher.

I didn't even realize there was a V2 out. I have 1.5 something and it won't auto or manual update. I guess it's time to do a reinstall.

At ebay, lately more and more weird things happening. A few of my customer received 2nd chance offer that was not sent by me but was claim to be my item. One of them received 3 2nd Chance offer that was from 3 different emails and non are from me but claimed to be my item that was ended earlier. So, make sure u look clearly before accepting deals or clicking on links.

Sorry if its been said...

Maybe your system wasnt hacked. Maybe they simply discovered your login and password. Stranger things have happened. I have gotten countless spoofed emails from "paypal" asking me to log in and verify this or that.. Possibility that you did just that, allowing them to view your information.
