My sister has three kids. She doesn't let them watch much tv (maybe 30 mins a week). They are very intelligent children as a result of tons of reading. The two older ones are 6 and 3, but they have above normal attention spans and love to learn.

Does anybody know some good magazines like Highlights that would be appropriate for a conservative family? I can't really find anything other than Highlights...

Let's see.....

Playboy
Maxim
Sports Illustrated

No...wait...that was diGriz's list :)

I know National Geographic makes children's mags...I imagine the 6 year old would enjoy reading, and the 3 year old would love the illustrations. I need to look into those for my two.

ok,nevermind on the National Geographic! I read reviews and they are awful!!!! Said the mag is full of ads...for video games, candy, etc. Don't imagine your sister would like this too much! Let me keep brainstorming.

Servant, our friends have been sending my daughter a series of magazines from Buy educational children’s magazines & popular kids books at Cricket now! that are truly outstanding. They have varying titles according to age group starting with "Babybug" to "Ladybug" to "Cricket" to "Spider", etc. and they are geared toward age appropriate articles, crafts, puzzles. They are pricier than some magazines but I can tell you they are an heirloom type item in both quality and material~I have saved all of hers and put them away for her future babies. In your case they could easily be passed along amongst the kids to get the most bang for the buck. :loving:

Ranger Rick, from the National Wildlife Federation might be good. Unless by "conservative" you mean they'd be bothered by evolution talk.

Thanks for the recommendation. I think I read those when I was a kid. I'm going to look into it. I don't think the evolution thing would be a problem, as it is unavoidable with books in general. They do however believe in the Biblical creation account.

Glad you mentioned that they have bad reviews, because I considered this as an option. I'll cross it off the list.

My kids enjoyed Kids Discovery Magazine. Some of the topics are complex, but the magazine breaks it up into fun little tidbits. There are no ads, either. It's great for homeschooling. :)

My kids used to get one called "Animal Babies" but I don't know who published it. Would have to google.

Ha! Well I happened to notice that since you started a thread on the subject, a handy-dandy ad popped up w/sites to order "Children's Magazines"....

Good catch Cybermom! It even has a promo code for $6 off the ones I suggested!! Oh, Goggle, you've done it again.....!!

My son gets National Geographic Kids. It's a small paperback that he gets once a month with no ads in it at all. It comes every month with some animal trading cards and a couple of puzzles inside. We can usually read it in one night before bed.
