I know that humanity is generally good, but every once in a while, I read something like this and I am saddened.
Spaz, I really respect you, and I know that you don't take offense to difference in opinion, so I don't feel bad in disagreeing with you on this.
I just don't think humanity is generally good. Historically speaking, society always returns to a state of violence and chaos. The strong murder the weak. The different are outcast. The trusting are betrayed. It's true that there are a many people that do good things, but human nature is itself self-centered. Self-centeredness invites greed, corruption, and manipulation. The reason it is more difficult to do the right thing is because our nature is not basically good. When we have a world without war or famine, when thieves become servants, when court houses are empty, and the word prison is an unknown term; then I can believe that man is good. Until then, it only takes me looking outside to realize that our world is always finding a new way to corrupt what is good. I just don't see how people can say after thousands of years of history and a corrupted world around us that man is basically good. When I see someone doing something good, it is so much more awe inspiring to me when I recognize that they are doing something divine, something abnormal, something truly great.
Any who, don't have to agree with me, just thought I'd throw that out there.
EDIT: That's not to say that it's justifiable by any means to do what is wrong. Just in case anyone thought that's what I meant.
