Does anyone know of a cheap way of placing a call collect?

my cousin is in a correctional facility and he's making a lot of call collect calls and his mom is just going crazy with the bill. if you guys have any idea or suggestions i would appreciate. i've been research all over the web but can't find anything. i'll have to call the phone company and see if they offer any inmate plans but thats just going to lower it about 10% of the bill.

Can they make free local calls ?,
In that case you could get a local number using vonage or any other VIOP provider.

Or you could set GrandCentral number in the same area code and make it ring on your local phone. Cheaper option. If you ask around in spoofee you could get an invite for GrandCentral

Or you could get a 1800 number from VOIP companies which will 100 minutes and then charge you per minute, I think that is also cheaper than collect

as far as i know the collect calls are charged to the person he is calling. if there is such at thing as free call collect i would love to know.

thats what i was trying to do to get GrandCentral but i dont have any invites i think they took that feature off.

Which category on spoofee would i post a thread in for Grand Central invites?

i've looked up vonage but nothing about call collect. he makes the call collects and his mom ends up paying for all the calls and i feel so sad for her, she's disabled and everything.

they make it really hard for inmates to connect with their family :(

or 1-800-COLLET or 1-800-CALL-ATT

or 1-800-COLLET or 1-800-CALL-ATT

i used to see all those commercials too, now when you need it its all gone :verysad:

i've told his mom to tell him to dial that 1-800-Call-ATT but i'm not sure if he is allowed to use a 800 number do to the fact that the facility is making money off of the collect calls.

i'm trying to call the correctional facility but like very other place you call its busy or no one is answering and i have to keep on calling.

maybe she can bake a cake with a calling card in it :)

I know that many correctional facilities use one call-collect company and that is it. I am sure that many inmates (or their families) have tried to get the telephone charges illegally taken off and so that has forced a change in the jail's policy. Our jailers will turn off the phones if the inmates attempt to dial any other phone numbers.

i called the correctional facility information center and they said that they can't place quarters to make a call, its like a pay phone with out the coin slot, and they can buy calling cards worth $10 or $20 but you have to go down to some really bad area of town where his mom lives or you mail it and that would take forever, especially if he has to buy the cards two at a time.

I was talking about free local call - same area code call -

It seems GrandCentral stopped the invite feature.

Assuming that he can call 800 number , she could setup a voip 800 number

for eg: http://www.lingo.com/voip/features/tollfree.jsp

I worked for a local phone company here. The correctional facilities used Alltel. The bills were horrible. I always felt really sorry for the families on the outside. There were so many wifes and girlfriends that felt obligated to accept the call. It really puts a burden on the families that are trying to make it with small children on one income. Unfortunately, the correctional facilities have a contract with the phone provider, the inmates do not have an option to use anyone else.

um. not to be too inconsiderate, because we all make mistakes, but... anyone consider that if you're in a correctional facility, part of paying your debt to society includes NOT talking on the phone for extended amounts of time? it's not supposed to be a vacation.

not trying to be preachy, but if you do the crime, you ought to do the time.

I agree w/ you to a certain extent.
What about those that were wrongfully incarcerated? Also, I think the level of crime should determine if someone is allowed to use the phone, who they call and for how long.

you know whats more sad there is no one to help, thats why i'm so stressed out trying to figure out this whole process thats i'm losing my mind. i've called so many places and everyone is giving me the run around. i've called the local phone company, the correctional facility, the call collect carrier, etc. the only place i haven't called is President Bush, LOL.

i agree, but think as a mother, your son, your child, you love your child whether they do anything good or bad. I feel for my aunt.
