Thanks for the great deal spoofee! My boss has one of these and it works great and it fairly simple to use, overall i think it is a great camera

I'm a bit disappointed with this camera

I bought this for $666 from Dell a few weeks ago to replace my 5.0 megapixel Sony. I thought I'd be upgrading to 8 megapixels. However, after reading the manual, it looks like you can only get 8 megapixels if you use the RAW setting (which eliminates autofocus). If you want autofocus, it's only in the 3.0 megapixel range. I could have read this incorrectly, but I think I'm right on this.

It does work well though. While some people have complained that it's light, if you upgrade the lens, or add an additional flash, it weighs it down quite a bit. I'm planning on adding a really expensive telephoto lens.

8 megapixels is the uncompressed "digital negative" of the image in raw format which requires additional post-processing. The ~3.5 megabytes size is the compressed jpeg size of the photos.

I bought the camera too. I love it :)

WHAT?

I need to correct almost everything in this post. First of all, you can shoot at the full 8 megapixel resolution no matter which mode you are using. It will shoot 8 megapixel RAW images at the same time as jpegs even. Autofocus has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the resolution the camera is shooting at. Autofocus is selected with a switch on the lens. The camera body knows what setting the lens is on, but it does not change the way it shoots.

The 8 megapixel resolution is a great feature, but if thats the only reason you got the camera, you have no idea the capabilities this camera has. Full manual control of all settings, 3 shots per second, this is not just something you buy becuase 8 is a bigger number than 5.

haha that was a very strong defense of the rebel xt. i hope to get one w/i a year... when i actually have an income. it's going to be one of my first big purchases. hopefully the price will have dropped more by then

As a Canon D20 user, I have to agree with everything mystic said here.

When the camera's image setting is set to Large and fine, then the pics will be 3456 x 2304 pixels = 8 million pixes = 8MP. Same for the RAW format also.

As a Canon 350d user, I have to agree with everything mystic said here.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY want this camera or a 20D by Christmas time. I have done LOTS of research, and have determined that the differences are so subtle to the non-professional user, that the 350D is a killer camera at a killer price. You folks need to realize that this camera has SO many features that, if you take the time to use them, makes this a killer deal. Speaking of killer deals.....

Dimichae - how did you get this camera and lens for $666 off Dell's site?

Aww crud...seems I missed the 20% coupon expiration too!

I think I got the same deal... It was:

$999 - 20% off - $60 coupon - $75 rebate = ~$665

Pretty good deal for a pretty good camera. My only gripe is that the black version was backordered, so I had to wait a month for it.

Please post that deal if it comes around again....I almost paid 810 today on ebay...

It almost seems like they dont make the black ones... They were all backorded when I got mine back in early May as well. Not a big deal though, still a great camera. The prices now are even better than what I paid, and I thought that was a steal.
