Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a good deal on a Canon Digital Rebel Eos. I have done some Google and PriceGrabber searches, but havn't found any good deals on them. Anyone know of a place to get a good deal? Rebates and such are fine.

What price level are you looking for? Are you looking for just the body or a kit with the crappy 18-55mm lens too? There's quite a few places you can get just the body for about $615, which is a great price for a dSLR body. $100 rebate info is on that link too.
Have you also considered the Canon Powershot Pro1? I had the Rebel originally but returned it in favor of the Pro1 and am extremely happy with my decision.

Hey there,

Thanks for the link to mysimon. They have better prices listed than they do on pricegrabber. I'm looking for a dSLR for my Dad for Christmas. He currently has an older SLR and he loves being able to change out lenses to shoot wide shots or do extreem macro shots. The Pro 1 looks like a great camera, but is a bit out of my price range. I hopping to get the rebel around $500, but this is looking to be out of the question. If you find any major deals let me know.

Thanks,

Kage, do you know if his current SLR is a Canon? The reason I ask is because lenses are not always interchangeable between brands. But assumig he has a Canon, yeah $500 for a brand-new Rebel body may be tough. I'm on photo websites often, so I will be sure to ask around. But to be honest, the only places I've seen that kind of a deal on the Rebel body is ebay or my local craigslist. It's possible to get a very gently used one for a good price, but that may not work for you if this is a gift. Sorry :(

I dont think that his current camera is a Canon. I know the lenses are not always interchangable, but from what I remember that the main lense is broke anyway so he will have to buy a new one.

Thanks for your help and if you come across a very good deal let me know.

Thanks,

I personally wouldn't recommend a used DSLR camera. They need more daily maintence then a regular 35mm SLR camera. I could see buying a used 35mm SLR because as long as the shutter works correctly, everything should be okay. Clean it up, once over it, and load it up for some testing shots. The difference is that image sensor in digital cameras. If they're not kept clean correctly, you could wind up with crap that never comes off, or worse, a toasted image sensor.

I was gonna ask/say what spoofskate said regarding what lenses he already has, but it seems like he only had one, and it's broken. So I'd figure out which camera he likes best and buy the kit. Kit lenses aren't crap as one person said, they may not be $400 dollar HQ lenses, but they're pleanty good enough to start with and if he wants more flexibility he can buy another lens. Hence the nice part about SLR.. If you choose Canon or Nikon, you have an endless supply of lenses and such from all manner of makers. Personally, I choose a Sigma camera as I liked it best and it takes wonderful photos.

So basically, figure out what he likes best and surprise him with that.. =)
