Just took note in USA Today that Mc Donalds is testing a high tech min gym for kids! "R Gyms" named for Ronald Mc Donald, include exercise bikes that play videos only when pedeled, and dance pads that show kids movies on nearby screens! I mean, how smart is that to ply kids with junk food, then, let them exercise it off?!

My question is, just WHO is really responsible for nutritional monitoring in children? Who is at fault for childhood obesity? Is it the parents for letting the little critters eat junk because their busy schedules don't let them cook meals at home? Is it the fast food chains for adding so much garbage to their food selections? Is it the FDA for allowing the choices to show up in the first place? Is it the Government for letting these food chains get away with pushing junk not only in restaurants, but in the school systems? Are we a society with no self-restraint?!?!

Diabetes and cardiac health issues are on the rise in young kids and young adults. Give your thoughts, and, possible solution!

Parents have control of their children's diet.....no time to cook? Run into Costco, pick-up a pre-cooked, hot, ready-to-eat $4.99 chicken and a salad. You'll probably have left overs to boot. It's healthier and cheaper.

I agree with Preco.A parent is responsible for their children that are minors and that certainly includes their health and it doesn't take a rocket scientist or a millionaire or even someone with alot of time on their hands, like preco said you can always pick something up at the grocers that is quick n easy that will be much healthier then fast food to feed your child ,or designate one day a week or even a month when you make large portioned healthy meals and freeze them for later on .Too many poeple keep passing the buck onto the next person in this society in my opinion.

Agreed! I mean, I worked sixty to eighty hours a week when my son was a wee lad and still found time to cook, package and FREEZE! That left my husband a "no brainer" of putting together a healthy meal. Sadly, we are turning into a society of "pissers and whinners" who refuse to accept the responsibility for turning our children into walking time bombs health wise. Sad really.....:worry:

:hmm: That's one way to decrease the popluation...turn everyone gay with soy shakes! :p

*Not that there's anything wrong with that*

:secret: Ever hear of RSF ? It's the Raccoon Soy Factory.......guess who owns & operates it....

certainly not the same person who controls the "striped stocking and red spike heels" syndicate

Society and, to a lesser degree, the parents are to blame. Here's my take:

In America we eat larger portions than elsewhere (for example, a serving of rice is only about a 1/2 cup). We just pile it on the plate. We go to buffets and stuff ourselves silly. These things we also do to our children. And then we tell them to clean their plate, which likely contains practically double servings of everything. And then to boot, we tell them eat all this food or you dont get cake.

How many of us have told our child (or niece, nephew, etc) that they couldnt be excused from the table because they didnt eat enough? How do we know? So we basically force our young to gorge themselves in order to get some type of very fattening dessert food.

Thats what I think.

The delicious food is to blame , the FDA needs to formulate a way of making the taste of food directly proportionate to the health in it.

Oh and please buy shares in RSF

dessert portions are as large as dinner portions.

school lunch menus are fattening. but who wants to make their kids' lunches?

walking around target and wal-mart is exercise enough.

thin and beautiful is just too unrealistic.

while we're at it, let's promote johnny even though he can't read or write; he tries really hard.

but but Johnny needs to be played with :(

My mom used to use that line "finish your plate" and that is why two of my brothers grew up chunky. They have since resolved that, but things aren't the same nowadays. When I was a kid we used to actually PLAY all day long. Kids now "play" in front of the t.v. or hand held games. It doesn't help that a lot of the good for you foods (mostly organic) are so darned expensive. It's much easier to buy the garbage at cheaper prices.
My look on that now is I am literally paying for those bad food choices. My gym membership is paid for now, but the other exercise stuff that I keep buying to help me lose weight isn't. In the long run I would rather spend a little more money on the good stuff than have to spend more on "contraptions" later.

Good point, butty. Nt only the money spent on contraptions, but the time spent using them that could be put to better use. Now you and Amberz go finish your plates or you dont get dessert.

Interesting comments all way around, and, a lot of truth and validity to the same. Personal accountablility is a novel idea with regards to healthy eating habits. I will laugh myself senseless when I hear/see folks go running off the gym in January! Only thing they need to do is put on a pair of sneakers, and, take a twenty minute walk. Seems simple enough! Keep the cardiovascular system in tune, and, the rest will follow along (as long as there are no health issues involved that need tending to!). Our human bodies need three meals a day to keep our BMR's up and burning off fat. Who eats three meals a day? To lazy! Easier to eat a bagel or donut. Parents need to get off their duffs, stop worrying about keeping up with the Jones's next door, and, feed their kids a SIT DOWN TOGETHER dinner, give them fruit or yogurt for desserts. The occassional pie/cake/cookie won't kill them, IF they get away from the tv and go outside to run around. I mean, look at the Amish people, they eat over four thousand calories a day, but, burn it all off with hard work and exercise. You will not see Rags in a gym next month, or, at any time....but you will catch me walking the nature trails...the trick is at the end of the trail is McDonald's! Gotta put blinders on and come home like a good girl!
Let's all be healthy in 2007! :)
