I know this is bad but,, i have 2 dozen cloth diapers that have been sitting in my front room where we smoke. Now they have turned yellow, a friend of mine wants them for his new baby for spit rags. How do i get the smoke stains out of them?? I have them in the washer in 30 min soak with alot of bleach and very hot water.any other ideas?? thnaks for any help. Anna oh and i have tried oxy clean and thats a waste of money. Please help!!:verysad:

I dont think you can remove it.. If bleach and an oxygen booster arent doing the trick youre prolly out of luck. Tell your friend no, its not safe.

You could try white vinegar or rubbing alcohol. Test it on a spot and see if it works, then I would prolly soak them in a small bowl of warm water and whichever one worked for you.

The stains may be permanent, but she just wants to use them for spit clothes, right? I don't think she'll care about the color.
But you may want to consider what that cigartte smoke is doing to your lungs and anyone else in your home. I don't want to sound like a nag, but if the smoke stained the clothes, imagine what it is doing to the lungs anyone else in the home that is breathing it.

Not sure if this will work in your set of circumstances, but, it works on "baby spit ups", formula stains, and, a few other stains:

One cup of liquid bleach
One cup of dishwasher detergent, the powder kind
Fill up a pail/bucket/sink with cold water
Place items into the solution and soak overnight
Wring out and place into your washer for a normal wash cycle

For the ladies out there whose husbands wear white teeshirts, and, they need a bit of whitening, this works great on them, and, the white underwear too! Hope it works for you! Rags :)

I'm with snibble on this one. I wouldn't but my opinion in but you posted it. If baby diapers are bad imagine what the poor childrens lungs (and yours!) are like.

Soak the stain for 15 minutes in a solution of 1 quart warm water and 1/2 teaspoon liquid detergent. Rinse well with water. Next, sponge the area with rubbing alcohol, rinse with water, and allow to dry.

Or you could try a stain remover called "Zout". I put Zout and something called Goop on tough stains for a few minutes while the washer fills up, then add the clothes, soap (just a tad extra) and bleach (either the strong stuff or the stuff for colors depending on the color of the clothes). If its whites or linens I'll add some Borax to the load. When the rinse cycle comes on, add some white vinegar.
Before putting it into the dryer, make sure the stain is gone. Once something goes through the dryer it makes it so much harder to get out.

With that method I've gotten iodine, india ink, and tons of other tough stains out.

People still use cotton diapers?

yeah, go figure. there are actually some people who would rather use recyclable materials than stuff that has to go to the landfill.

what a world, what a world.

The way I see it, the diapers that end up in the landfill are like time-release fertilizer. In 283 years, when the diaper is finally broken down enough, the poop can leech out into the soil and help plants to grow.

I would agree with the vinegar too. That's what we washed my grandfather's house/walls/cabinets, etc with after he passed away. He was a avid smoker and the house reflected it.

lol @ "avid smoker" like it was his hobby.

I'm sorry, its just that the context struck me as humorous.

What about the brown or multi-colored underwear? :o

By the way, acetone and a wire brush will get those stains out anna!

I bought a computer from a smoker & never could get that smell off of it.

Oh shucks yeah, that mixture takes out "wipes and swipes stains!" Just on white colored clothing, otherwise the bleach will spot your wardrobe! Then again, most guys don't worry over such stuff! I can always send out some of Jeb Stuart's "pee pee pads" to line people's "drawers" with, like a big Depends! :bigok:
