Okay, my teenager calls me today that she is filling out a form through the city and my income is asked/required. Supposedly these city summer jobs are by lottery. :suspicious: Why would they need my income?

When applying for a job, should these items be taken into consideration? Does it matter if the family received public assistance? food stamps? etc.? Shouldn't a job application be based on interests, qualifications, availability and a willingness to perform a task?

What I really don't understand is if this is based on a lottery, why should this information matter and what purpose is this used for?

If one's family is over the financial limit, does their application not qualify for the lottery?

So totally not happy with this.:mmph:

I'd be happy to comment on your post, but I'll first need the name of your favorite tv show and the number of lipsticks currently in your purse.

If x = the number of Lipsticks in purse AND y = the number of Shoes in closet THEN if x * y >= 10,000 your name is Preco.

Watch out.

This is just a way for Bloomberg to find out how much you are making so that he can raise your taxes.

(p.s. the NJ version of this application asks for bank acccount & PINs)

It's not a lottery, if they're asking for that kind of information, the hiring is based on 'need', and genetics.
Why not apply for work in the private sector?

Well, the private sector is where she'll end up going (apparently no choice in the matter). However, our tax dollars are funding these jobs, why are parts of the tax paying public excluded? It's a job, not a hand out/entitlement.

There are other programs funded by tax payers to help with "needs".

Not a good lesson for our kids. No matter how qualified and willing one is to work, they will be pushed aside and discriminated against, "just because".

I disagree, it's an excellent lesson for our kids. They need to be aware of the inappropriate behavior of all levels of government from an early age. It will help them, hopefully, to correct the problems caused by such malfeasance.

Or it will discourage them to the point where they say, "Why bother?" If you can't beat them, join them. Create an unsustainable society that does the minimum to get more......SMH

I suspect you've raised them to not think in that direction.

Do you have proof that they actually use the information to exclude higher income families? Or is it just an assumption based on the fact that they ask?

That question does not belong on an employment form. Period.

Just like a question about sexual orientation, religious affiliation, etc. It is an employment application.

Why would they be asking this question for if not to be used as consideration for employment? Do you think they are only including high incomes for employment and excluding the lower? :noidea:

It could just be the Government's uncontrollable desire to snoop into our private affairs. Nonetheless, it shouldn't be on a job application.
